Eagles clip Foxes in battle for district lead

CLOVIS - Clovis Christian's boys overcame a hot start by Fort Sumner and handed the Foxes a 73-59 defeat on Thursday night in a battle for the District 6-1A lead.

Juniors Carter Teune (26), Noah Gershon (20) and O.B. Blanco (17) combined for 63 points as the Eagles (13-4, 4-0) snapped a two-game losing streak.

Fort Sumner (10-3, 3-1) built a 19-12 advantage after one quarter as junior Clay Norman hit four 3-pointers. CCS rallied to lead 33-32 at halftime, then outscored Fort Sumner 40-27 in the final two cantos.

Norman finished with 24 points for Fort Sumner, while sophomore Joaquin Segura added 14 points.

In other area boys games on Thursday:

Olton 45, Farwell 44 - At Olton, Mustangs senior Chris Urbina capped a 19-point night on a go-ahead 3-pointer with six seconds left in a battle for the District 3-2A lead.

The game was a makeup of a Tuesday postponement. Junior Jake Soliz added 11 points for the Mustangs (23-3, 3-0).

For the Steers (20-5, 2-1), senior Leo Nunez scored 11 points and sophomore Corey Stancell had 10.

Texico 74, Clayton 51 - At Clayton, junior Jahvon Askew's 29 points helped spark the Wolverines in the District 6-2A opener for both teams.

Sophomore Cade Figg scored 12 points for Texico (9-5 overall). The Yellowjackets (10-5) were led by juniors Blake McClure with 18 points and Ryan Ruf with 16.

Dora 41, Gateway Christian 17 - The Coyotes blanked Gateway in the first quarter and built a 25-6 lead by halftime in the District 4-1A opener for both teams at Dora.

Junior Steven Masini led the Coyotes (9-7) with 19 points, while senior Luke Tipton's 10 points paced the Warriors (1-13).

Logan 65, Grady 56 - The Longhorns outscored host Grady 21-9 in the third stanza to open a 13-point advantage in a District 6-1A matchup.

Junior Park Strong scored 22 points for Logan (6-12, 2-2), while sophomore Kaden Stoner had 17 and junior Christian Kotara 16. For the Bronchos (4-14, 0-4), senior Jordan Verble put in 21 points, sophomore Zane Rush added 15 and freshman Jax Piepkorn chipped in 13.

In Thursday area girls tilts:

Clayton 48, Texico 25 - At Clayton, the Lady Jackets broke away from a one-point halftime lead, holding Texico to just nine second-half points in both teams' District 6-2A opener.

Junior Morgan Crisp had 13 points and senior Akira Herrera scored 11 for Clayton (12-5). Junior Catelyn Breshears led the way for the Lady Wolverines (5-9) with 15 points.

Logan 55, Grady 15 - At Grady, the Lady Longhorns led 17-9 at the quarter and limited the Lady Bronchos to six points the rest of the way in District 6-1A.

Senior Reece Goldston scored all 15 of her points in the opening half for Logan (17-3, 4-0), including 10 in the first quarter, while sophomore Hailee Robertson finished with 10. For Grady (5-11, 0-4), sophomore Taylor Foote tallied eight points.

In a District 4-1A girls matchup on Thursday at Dora, Gateway Christian (12-1, 1-0) posted a 47-44 victory over the Lady Coyotes (9-7, 0-1).
