ROSWELL — Clovis High’s first-year wrestling programs competed in District 4-5A duals on Saturday. The boys were defeated by Carlsbad 74-6, Hobbs 54-18 and Roswell High 50-10, while the girls lost to Hobbs 29-6 and won the only two matches they had against Roswell High.
Against Carlsbad, the Wildcats win was a forfeit for freshman Nick Tackitt at 172 pounds, while two of their three wins against Hobbs were the result of first-period pins by juniors Michael Tree at 170 pounds and Semaj Satcher at 195. They also claimed a forfeit win by freshman Kael Berry in the 120-pound division.
Against Roswell High, freshman Rhiley Williams scored a first-period pin at 138 pounds while Tree claimed a 9-2 victory at 170.
For the Lady Wildcats, Katie Jordan posted a first-period pin against Hobbs’ Nicole Rados at 126 pounds. She also claimed a 13-1 decision in her match against the Lady Coyotes, while Clovis’ other win in that duel came on a first-period pin by eighth-grader Zulehiry Mendoza at 120.
Carlsbad did not send girls wrestlers to the event.
Coach Eric Zottneck said he plans to take five girls to Socorro on Thursday and 13 boys to Carlsbad on Saturday for district competition. The state wrestling meet is on tap the following weekend in Albuquerque.
