Elida bounces back with win over Bobcats

ELIDA — Senior Rylan Creighton scored with four seconds left off a full-court pass from junior Aiden Yates, giving Elida’s boys a 64-62 victory over Hagerman on Tuesday night in a battle of highly-ranked small-school teams.

Hagerman (17-2), which came back with a 56-41 win at New Mexico Military on Wednesday night, is ranked second in Class 2A while the Tigers (16-3) are No. 2 in Class 1A.

Creighton finished with 23 points, while Yates had 21 and senior Jose Jimenez 12 for the Tigers, who erased an eight-point halftime deficit. The Bobcats were led by 20 points from senior Roberto Delacruz and 14 from senior Jonah Bejarano.

In other area boys action from Tuesday:

Clovis Christian 59, Melrose 37 — At Melrose, the Eagles took over the top spot in District 6-1A, hitting six of their nine 3-pointers in the first quarter en route to a 27-7 lead. Sophomore Jayden Martinez scored all nine of his points on three 3s during the stanza.

CCS (15-5, 6-1 district), which went 6-of-8 from distance in the stanza, got 23 points from junior Carter Teune, 14 from junior O.B. Blanco and 11 from junior Noah Gershon. Senior Brandon Garcia paced the Buffaloes (13-6, 4-2), coming off a close loss the night before at Texico, with 12 points.

Lovington 64, Texico 50 — The visiting Wildcats opened a 13-point halftime lead en route to a non-district win over the Wolverines.

Senior Isaac Hinton had four of Lovington’s nine 3-point baskets and finished with 20 points, while the Wildcats (15-7) also got 14 points from sophomore Julian Arroyo. Texico (11-8) was led by three 3-pointers and 15 points from sophomore Cade Figg.

Fort Sumner 90, Grady 60 — In another 6-1A matchup at Grady, the Foxes (12-3, 5-1) turned a six-point halftime lead into a 24-point margin, scoring 31 points in the third frame.

Sophomore Joaquin Segura poured in 38 points for Fort Sumner, while sophomore Seth Saiz had 27 and junior Saul Marquez 10. For the Bronchos (7-15, 2-5), senior Jordan Verble tallied 21 points, while freshman Jax Piepkorn had 13 and junior Carlos Marin 10.

Farwell 97, Bovina 25 — The Steers, gearing up for a District 3-2A showdown on Friday against first-place Olton, had no trouble with the Mustangs at Farwell, leading 28-1 at the quarter and steadily expanding it from there.

Eleven players scored for Farwell (23-5, 5-1), led by senior Grayson Waldrop with 19, sophomore Corey Stancell with 13 and junior Alec Actkinson with 10. Junior Caesar Amaya scored eight points for Bovina (4-16, 1-6).

Littlefield 73, Muleshoe 30 — The homestanding Wildcats scored 28 first-quarter points to take control in a District 3-3A matchup.

Senior Jaron Cabello paced Littlefield (9-15, 5-5) with 20 points while junior Tyrell Norman scored 17. For the Mules (6-14, 2-8), junior Irvin Torres had eight points.

Gateway Christian 50, Floyd 35 — In District 4-1A at Roswell, the host Warriors (3-13, 2-1) stayed in the district race, pulling away by outscoring the Broncos 16-7 in the final stanza.

Seniors Caleb Bogle and Luke Tipton collected 16 and 14 points, respectively, for Gateway. Senior Ricky Ramirez took game honors with 26 points for the Broncos (2-17, 0-5).

In area girls games on Tuesday:

Farwell 73, Bovina 35 — At Farwell, the Lady Blue locked up a perfect District 3-2A slate, riding three 3-pointers and 22 points from sophomore Chloee Whitten.

Junior Jaelyn Smith also had three of the eight 3-pointers for Farwell (27-4, 8-0) en route to 13 points, while freshman Bella Jaime added 12 points. Junior Alyssa Marquez led the Fillies (10-14, 2-6) with 17 points.

Lovington 43, Texico 33 — At Texico, the Lady Wolverines carried a 20-16 lead into halftime, only to see the Lady Wildcats (6-17) go on an 18-8 run in the third stanza.

Sophomore Elizabeth Buendia led Lovington with 20 points, while junior J’Lynn Aranda added 14. For Texico (6-13), junior Catelyn Breshears tallied 15 points.

Fort Sumner 69, Grady 43 — At Grady, the District 6-1A-leading Vixens opened a 26-point halftime lead and kept the Lady Bronchos at bay the rest of the way.

Nine players scored for Fort Sumner (15-2, 5-0), led by junior Avery Cavett with 11 points and senior Megan Oberg and freshman Allyssa Casaus with 10 apiece. Freshman Juanita Ramirez took game honors with 13 points for Grady (9-11, 2-4), while sophomore Shayla White had three 3-pointers and 10 points.
