Lady Cats compete in district meet

SOCORRO — Clovis High’s first-year girls wrestling team competed in District 2 competition on Thursday, sending six girls to the event.

The Lady Wildcats tied with Ruidoso for 27th place in the 30-school competition, each with 10 points. Highland captured the team title with 124 points, with host Socorro finishing second with 84.

Senior Yazmean Ledezma came the closest to qualifying for next week’s state meet at Albuquerque, going 3-2 for the day in the 138-pound division.

Ledezma won her first match by first-period fall against Grants’ Annalieze Gutierrez, then lost on a second-period pin to Valley’s Lorelei Troncoso. She came back for pins in the second frame against Highland’s Briana De La Cruz and in the first against Hobbs’ Kylee Sisneros before being eliminated by Socorro’s Shaydan Castillo on a third-period pin.

Five other Lady Cats all went 0-2 for the day. At 120 pounds, sophomore Katie Joslin had a pair of competitive matches, losing 3-2 to Socorro’s Sasha Gonzalez and 7-4 to Roswell Goddard’s Yaretzi Palma.

At 114, eighth-grader Zulehiny Mendoza lost by first-period pin to Albuquerque High’s Abri Coca and by second-period pin to Mayfield’s Hannia Villegas. At 126, sophomore Nikole Weeden lost to Hobbs’ Nicole Rados and Highland’s Leslie Garcia on first-period pins.

At 132, freshman Yoselin Romero was pinned in the second period by Deming’s Laura Almanza and in the first by Mayfield’s Cassidy Sanchez while at 152, freshman Jordan Archuleta lost by first-period pin to Hobbs’ Ja’Nay Banks and by second-period fall to Albuquerque Academy’s Kate Aubin.

Boys district competition is slated for Saturday at Carlsbad. CHS coach Eric Zottneck said the Wildcats will take 13 wrestlers, entering someone in every weight class except 106.
