CCS notches road win over Tigers

ELIDA — After running off a 12-game winning streak earlier this season, Clovis Christian’s boys have been a bit up-and-down lately.

Of course, the Eagles have generally been facing good competition.

Saturday night was certainly one of those “up” nights for CCS. The Eagles, who lost at home to Dora by 31 points on Friday night, buried 11 3-pointers, including five in the opening period, en route to a 76-70 non-district victory over Elida.

The teams meet again on Saturday at CCS in their regular-season finale.

Junior Carter Teune poured in 39 points and also grabbed 10 rebounds for the Eagles (17-6), who led 27-13 at the quarter and then pulled away from a 60-60 tie with a 4-point play by junior Noah Gershon early in the final stanza.

Gershon had five 3-point baskets and finished with 20 points. Senior Rylan Creighton led the Tigers (17-4) with 26 points, while juniors Aiden Yates and Jose Jimenez finished with 18 and 13, respectively.

In other boys action on Saturday:

Dora 41, Gateway Christian 31 — Coming off 31-point win the night before at CCS, the Coyotes (12-8, 3-1 District 4-1A) struggled a bit with the Warriors in Roswell. Dora (13-8, 4-1) used a 13-1 second-quarter spurt to lead 20-10 at halftime.

Junior Steven Masini had 13 points and junior Bryson Paxton 10 for Dora. Seniors Luke Tipton and Caleb Bogle each scored 11 points for Gateway (3-16, 2-4).

In a girls contest on Saturday:

Gateway Christian 58, Dora 48 — The Lady Warriors pulled away from a 12-12 tie by outscoring Dora 22-13 in the second period in District 4-1A.

Junior M.J. Stephens collected 25 points and senior Sarah Liley added 13 for district-leading Gateway (16-1, 4-0). Sophomore Faith Jasso tallied 23 points for Dora (10-9, 1-2).

In Friday area boys games:

Olton 58, Farwell 54 — The Mustangs don’t generally beat Farwell by much, but in the last couple of years they’ve seemed to find a way to get the better of the Steers in District 3-2A.

Junior Andrew Martinez notched 13 points and junior Jake Soliz added 10 for Olton (27-3, 7-0), which erased a seven-point deficit with a 23-point second quarter. Sophomore Corey Stancell took game honors with 15 points for Farwell (23-6, 5-2).

Muleshoe 38, Denver City 31 — At Muleshoe, the Mules dropped the Mustangs into a three-way tie for the District 3-3A lead with one game left.

Senior Brennen Davis scored 13 points and junior Irvin Torres had 10 for Muleshoe (7-14, 3-8). Junior Erik Escobar led the way for Denver City (14-13, 8-3) with 10 points.

Denver City was to host fifth-place Littlefield on Tuesday while Brownfield (11-16, 8-3) visited Dimmitt (17-9, 8-3).

Dora 70, Clovis Christian 39 — The Coyotes posted their second lopsided win over the Eagles in the past couple of weeks, jumping ahead 13-4 at the quarter and winning behind 31 points and 32 rebounds from Masini. Paxton and senior Cache Skelley added 14 points each for Dora.

Junior O.B. Blanco topped the Eagles with 12 points.
