Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
ALBUQUERQUE — Clovis High’s swim teams will take around 15 athletes to state competition this week, hosted by Albuquerque Academy.
The boys portion of the state meet is scheduled for today, with the girls competing on Saturday. The top 16 places are scored in each event.
CHS co-coach Vincent de Maio said on the boys side, the Wildcats expect to have a shot at the top eight in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. They are also strong in the 500 freestyle, led by junior Thomas Palla and sophomore Porter Kidd; the 200 individual medley, led by Kidd, the 100 butterfly with sophomore David Reeb, and the 200 freestyle with Kidd and junior Clayton Hogan.
For the Lady Wildcats, freshman Julia Spears is among the top competitors in the 500 freestyle and 200 IM while eighth-grader JuJu Fernandez will look to score well in the 100 and 200 freestyle events. De Maio said the Lady Cats could also compete for a top-eight finish in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.
Wrestlers send two to boys state meet — Juniors Michael Tree at 170 pounds and Semaj Satcher at 195 will represent Clovis High’s first-year program in state boys wrestling competition on Saturday in Albuquerque.
Tree earned a second-place finish in Saturday’s district meet at Carlsbad. He lost by major decision (14-1) in the championship match to Carlsbad’s Octavio Ramirez.
The two finalists in each weight class automatically qualified for state. Meantime, Satcher got in as a third-place wild card, pinning Hobbs’ Jesse Chavez in the final round late in the first period.
Eight others placed in the top four for the Cats. Junior Nik Tackitt was third at 182, while finishing fourth were senior Nehemiah Gonzales at 160; junior Joe Chavira at 220, sophomore, Josh Roberts-Beagle at 132; freshmen Noah Lyles at 145 and Miguel Hernandez at 152, and eighth-graders Noah Rodriguez at 126 and Kaleb King at heavyweight.
