CANYON — After winning their first postseason game in around 35 years on Tuesday, Bovina’s girls came awfully close to doubling that total on Friday night.
The Fillies erased a 12-point, third-quarter deficit to gain a 48-46 advantage in the final minute of regulation, but Clarendon got a basket to tie it and force overtime, then outscored Bovina 13-7 in the extra session to claim a 61-55 victory on Friday night at Randall H.S.
The Lady Broncos were slated to face Wellington in a neutral-site round-of-16 game either Monday or Tuesday.
Junior Alyssa Marquez was the only player in double figures for the Fillies (11-16) with 24 points.
In other area girls action on Friday night:
Melrose 43, Gateway Christian 36 — At Roswell, the District 6-1A Lady Buffs upended District 4-1A regular-season champ and fourth-ranked Gateway behind 14 points from senior Johanna Roybal and 10 from junior Sorrell Allen.
Melrose (15-7), ranked sixth in 1A, built an eight-point halftime lead and held off the Lady Warriors (16-2). Junior M.J. Stephens paced Gateway with 12 points.
Pecos 40, Texico 33 — In District 6-2A, the visiting Lady Panthers outscored Texico 14-7 in the third stanza to open an eight-point margin.
Junior Savanah Ortiz posted 13 points for Pecos (2-4, 11-13), while junior Catelyn Breshears had 15 points for the Lady Wolverines (6-17, 0-4).
In area boys tilts on Friday night:
Clovis Christian 59, Fort Sumner 56 — The Eagles won the battle for the District 6-1A regular-season championships behind eight 3-pointers and 31 points from junior Noah Gershon and 17 points from junior Carter Teune.
CCS (19-6, 9-1) trailed 30-24 at halftime, but Gershon had 19 points and five of his 3s in the final two stanzas to help the Eagles rally. CCS made 10 3s overall, with Teune and sophomore Jason Martinez adding one apiece.
High scorers for the Foxes (15-4, 8-2) were sophomores Seth Saiz and Joaquin Segura with 15 points each, while junior Clay Norman added 10.
Pecos 57, Texico 47 — At Texico, the District 6-2A regular-season champion and second-ranked Panthers (20-6, 6-0) led 17-11 at the quarter and were able to play the Wolverines even the rest of the way.
Junior Jodaiah Padilla scored 18 points and junior Malik Barrens had 12 for Pecos. Junior Jahvon Askew scored 11 points for Texico (12-11, 3-3), while senior Kayden Queener and junior Max Villareal chipped in nine apiece.
Melrose 70, Gateway Christian 36 — At Roswell, the Buffaloes cruised to a 24-point halftime lead and ended the regular campaign with an easy non-district win over the Warriors.
Senior Brandon Garcia had a personal-best 23 points for Melrose (16-7), while senior Logan DeVaney contributed 19. Senior Luke Tipton paced Gateway (3-17) with 14 points.
