Cats turn back Coyotes, then lose at Carlsbad

CARLSBAD - Clovis High's boys played Carlsbad pretty evenly on Thursday night ... after the first quarter.

The Wildcats weren't able to overcome the slow start, and saw their season end with a 51-41 loss to the Cavemen in the District 4-5A tournament semifinals.

"We didn't score well in the quarter, but we felt like we were still in pretty good shape," Cats coach Jaden Isler said of the 10-3 deficit. "The rest of the game we played fairly even."

Six-foot-7 senior center Tylan Gonzales dominated inside and led the Cavemen (22-5) with 20 points, while 6-5 junior guard Devin McWright added 10.

Isler said the margin didn't fluctuate a whole lot after the opening stanza. Carlsbad's largest lead was 15.

"It seemed like every time we'd get a little closer, they went on a little run," he said.

Junior guard Brian Weiss led the Cats with 12 points, while senior guard Juan Hernandez chipped in 11.

Clovis 57, Roswell High 52 (Tuesday) - The Cats used a 20-3 run in the first quarter to build a cushion, and they stayed in control for the most part despite never quite putting the Coyotes away.

A big reason for that was free throw shooting - Clovis went 15-of-40 for the contest.

The result left both teams at 6-21 for the season, but the Cats went 4-0 against the Coyotes.

"We definitely (played well) in the first quarter," CHS boys coach Jaden Isler said. "I think they scored their only field goal (of the period) in the last minute. We got some steals, and that definitely got us some easy buckets.

"Our defense just helped our offense in that first quarter. We were able get out in the open floor some."

Roswell High kept chipping away, but never got closer than four points in the final minute.

"The rest of the game (after the opening stanza) was kind of like the last couple of games against them," Isler said. "Our free throw shooting made it a lot tighter at the end than it needed to be."

Senior guard Juan Hernandez scored 17 points and junior forward R.J. Nora had 11 for the Cats. Junior forward Ivan Miramontes led Roswell High with four 3-pointers and 14 points, while junior forward Jachan Lackey and sophomore guard Josh Estrada tallied 10 apiece.
