Steers knock off Whirlwinds in 2A playoff opener

LITTLEFIELD — Farwell’s boys began Texas Class 2A postseason play on Tuesday with a 72-59 bi-district victory over Floydada.

Senior Grayson Waldrop nailed four 3-pointers and scored 21 points for the Steers (24-7), who were to face Gruver (24-7) on Friday night in an area round matchup also slated for Littlefield.

The Whirlwinds (20-7) led 16-10 at the quarter, but the Steers went on a 23-9 run in the third stanza to open a 10-point lead.

Senior Leon Nunez added 18 points while senior Juan Gaxiola had two 3s and 12 points for Farwell. Floydada’s top scorers were junior Abran Castillo with 28 points and sophomore Aiden Trevino with 10.

In other area boys games on Tuesday:

Logan 55, Melrose 52 — In the District 6-1A tournament at Melrose, Longhorns sophomore Brock Burns banked in a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give fourth-seeded Logan (9-17) the upset over the No. 3 Buffaloes (17-8).

The Longhorns outscored Melrose 19-9 in the final period. Burns finished with 19 points, while junior Christian Kotara had 13 and sophomore Kaden Stoner 11 for Logan.

Seniors Brody McAlister with 13 points and Logan DeVaney with 11 paced the Buffs.

Floyd 52, Gateway Christian 45 — In the District 4-1A tourney at Roswell, the fourth-seeded Broncos pulled away in the second half to beat the Warriors for the first time in three meetings this season.

Seniors Hugo Diaz and Ricky Ramirez scored 16 points each and combined for three 3-pointers for Floyd (3-18), while junior Brayan Gallegos finished with nine. Gateway (3-19), seeded third, got 15 points from senior Caleb Vogle, 11 from freshman Ethaniel Wigley and 10 from senior Luke Tipson.

In girls action on Tuesday:

Melrose 42, San Jon 24 — The third-seeded Lady Buffs opened a 33-6 halftime lead with a 22-poit second quarter and cruised past the Lady Coyotes.

Juniors Sorrell Allen and Johanna Roybal tallied 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Lady Buffs, while freshman Cnatzee Elliott topped San Jon (5-14) with 10 points.
