CHS teams post 10-10 marks in Lovington meet

LOVINGTON — Clovis High’s tennis teams managed a 10-10 overall split over the weekend in a five-team tournament hosted by Lovington.

Playing two singles and two doubles matches against each foe, the Wildcats defeated Portales 4-0, lost to Hobbs 4-0 and went 2-2 against Lovington, Roswell Goddard and Artesia. The Lady Wildcats were 3-1 against Goddard and Portales, 2-2 against Lovington and 1-3 against Artesia and Hobbs.

Ayia Al Saleh went 2-0 for the Lady Cats in singles and teamed with Niliyaah Hall to win both of their doubles matches in the event, highlighting CHS performances.

Meantime, the young Portales squads — no seniors, two juniors and six eighth-graders among 17 combined players in the program — managed two wins in doubles on the girls’ side in their season opener. Junior Jenna Brown and sophomore Maggie Duong beat their Goddard opponents in straight sets, while freshman Kimberly Macias and sophomore Lorena Fernandez posted a 6-4, 7-5 win against Clovis.

The Cats and Lady Cats opened the season on Feb. 18-19 in a six-team tournament at Carlsbad. Each school played full duals against three of the other four teams.

The boys finished fourth overall, defeating Lovington 8-1 and losing to Carlsbad 8-1 and Artesia 7-2. Meantime, the girls were also fourth, defeating Lovington 7-2 and losing to the Cavegirls 8-1 and to Roswell High (score not available).

Al Saleh posted three singles wins in the event. Meantime, the boys were led by David Case, who won in singles against Lovington 6-0, 6-1 and Carlsbad in a third-set supertiebreakers 6-4, 2-6, (10-6), while losing to Artesia 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, (10-6).

Clovis was slated to visit Goddard for a dual on Tuesday before returning to Roswell for a weekend tournament. Meantime, Portales squads will be in the Alamogordo Invite this weekend.
