LITTLEFIELD — The season came to an end on Friday night for the Farwell Steers, who dropped a 61-55 decision to Gruver in a Texas Class 2A boys area round matchup.
The Greyhounds (25-7) built a 17-point lead through three quarters before Farwell rallied late to make it close. Six-foot-3 senior Colton Millsap scored 19 points and 6-5 junior Jefferson Weaver added 18 for Gruver.
High scorer for the Steers (24-8) was senior Leo Nunez with 20 points.
In New Mexico area girls district championship games on Friday night:
Melrose 35, Fort Sumner 34 — Inbounding from near midcourt with less than a second left, junior Isabelle Sena found sophomore Graci Odom with a deep pass for the game-winning basket as time expired, giving the third-seeded Lady Buffs (19-7) their third win in four nights and the District 6-1A tourney title.
Odom finished with 11 points and Sena scored nine for Melrose while the top-seeded Vixens (17-4), who led nearly the entire game, got 13 points from senior Jordan Wilton and nine from senior Megan Oberg.
It was the third time within the last year that Melrose has edged the Vixens by a point at Fort Sumner. During last year’s COVID-shortened spring campaign, the Lady Buffs won a regular-season district matchup 39-38, then pulled out a 29-28 victory over the Vixens in the 1A state semifinals.
Gateway Christian 54, Dora 36 — At Roswell, the second-seeded Lady Coyotes led the District 4-1A tourney title tilt by three at the quarter and kept it close against top-seeded Gateway until the Lady Warriors went on a 19-6 run in the final stanza.
Senior Hannah Lilley scored 15 points while her twin, Sarah Lilley, and freshman Kimber Balok added 11 apiece for Gateway (17-2). Sophomore Breanna Rodriguez led Dora (12-11) with 13 points, while senior Katelyn Burnett was close behind with 12.
