PORTALES — Police in Portales have arrested a 35-year-old woman in connection with a hit-and-run accident that critically injured a 12-year-old boy just before 7 p.m. Sunday.
Police stated in a news release Monday they had arrested Christine Shuman on charges she left the scene of an accident that resulted in great bodily harm, a third-degree felony, police and Ninth Judicial District Attorney Brian Stover said.
Stover said the boy was struck as he walked home from Legacy Church in Portales. The impact sent the boy over the car, Stover said.
Police said Shuman is also charged with careless driving and other traffic-related charges. She was booked into the Roosevelt County Detention Center and will be awaiting further court proceedings, police posted on their Facebook page.
Stover said a warrant for Shuman’s arrest was issued Monday.
Police earlier Monday had asked for the public’s help in locating the driver.
Stover said at 5:30 p.m. Monday he was awaiting an update on the boy’s condition.
