Smith posts victories in trio of throwing events at WT meet

CANYON, Texas — Junior Tania Smith scored in three throwing events, highlighting Eastern New Mexico University’s performances in West Texas A&M’s Spring Break Classic, the opening meet of the outdoor track season.

Smith finished second in shot put at 43 feet, 1 3/4 inches, her second-best outing in outdoor competition and the second-best on record at ENMU. She was also third in discus (120-9) and eighth in hammer throw (127-8).

Clovis freshman Kiara Cox placed in two sprints, claiming sixth in the 100 (12.67 seconds) and eighth in the 200 (25.99), while freshman Alisha Hayde was sixth in the 800 (2:29.83).

Meantime, ENMU’s women notched five of the top seven spots in the 1,500, with senior Lethabo Seema second (4:51.85), sophomore Dorcas Kosgei third (4:54.70), senior Aminata Kenyawani fourth (4:54.98), senior Malethabo Seems sixth (4:57.89) and sophomore Marta Pascoa seventh (4:58:40).

On the men’s side, ENMU had double placers in the 1,500, with sophomore Dan Hurren second (1:52.42, and junior Devin Cheruiyot third (1:59.07), and in the 800, with junior Kelvin Kipkemboi fourth in a personal-best 4:09.00 and sophomore Japhet Toroitich sixth in 4:14.62.

ENMU’s tracksters return to action April 1-2 in Texas Tech’s Masked Rider Open in Lubbock.
