Sundevils rally to post victory over Portales

SANTA FE — Sandia Prep scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth to overhaul Portales High 6-4 on Saturday and claim fifth place in Santa Fe High’s Jim Pierce Memorial baseball tournament.

Portales (3-3) jumped on the Sundevils for an early 4-0 lead and still lead 4-1 heading into the last of the fourth. The game was called after four innings due to the tournament’s two-hour time limit.

Sandia Prep (7-4) outhit the Rams 6-4. Senior Hagen Rains singled, tripled and scored twice for PHS, while sophomore Kaden Gutierrez delivered a two-run double in the third.

Junior Lucas Lemons had the big hit for Sandia Prep, a three-run double in the fourth inning.

On Friday, Portales posted a 6-3 win over Raton in a consolation semifinal matchup stopped after 5 1/2 innings due to the time limit.

Junior Miguel Gomez and eighth-grader Carson Pfaffenberger combined to limit the Tigers (2-6) to just four hits while striking out eight. Meantime, the Rams opened a 5-0 lead through two innings.

Sophomore Zane Mayberry went 2-for-3 with a two-run double and two runs scored, while Rains also had a two-run double. Sophomore Isaac Garcia hit a two-run single for Raton in the sixth inning.

Host St. Michael’s (7-5), which beat Portales in the quarterfinals, extended its winning streak to seven in Saturday’s championship game with an 8-1 victory over Bernalillo.

Portales was slated to return to action on Tuesday night at Clovis. The Rams’ will take on Moriarty in a 4:30 p.m. single contest on Thursday and Eunice in a 4:30 p.m. twin bill on Friday at Ram Field.
