Wolverines rally to earn twin bill split at Raton

RATON — Texico had three players with four hits each on Saturday and the Wolverines downed Raton 16-11 to gain a split of their baseball doubleheader. The Tigers won the opener 5-0.

Texico (4-4) scored six runs in the top of the first in the nightcap and led 7-2 through five innings. Both teams were getting a little short on pitching at that point, but the Wolverines managed to play Raton to a 9-9 standoff over the final two frames.

Senior Kayden Queener went 4-for-5 and drive in three runs for Texico, while sophomore Daltyn Cain was 4-for-5 with a triple and sophomore Easton Cooper finished 4-for-6. Sophomore Kyle Gonser pitched 4 2/3 innings to earn the win for the Wolverines.

In Game 1, Texico managed just four singles, but stayed close until the Tigers opened a 4-0 lead with a two-run fifth.

Junior Tristan Chavez worked the first four innings for Texico, while sophomore Erik Davalos finished up.

In girls softball on Friday:

Dora 13-10, Jal 10-11 — In a District 4/1-2A matchup, the Lady Coyotes (7-4, 1-3 district) built a 10-3 lead with six runs in the third and held on late for the first-game win. Sophomore Bre’ann Rodriguez was 4-for-4 with a double and a triple for Dora, while junior Jenna Ramirez added two hits and a walk.

Dora led 5-0 after a half-inning in Game 2, but Jal rallied to take the lead with five runs in the bottom of the second. The Lady Coyotes scored twice in the seventh to make it close before the Lady Panthers got the final out.

Rodriguez went 3-for-4 in that game with a triple, while senior Summer Fleming was 4-for-4 with a triple and three runs scored.

Sophomore Faith Jasso pitched both games for Dora.

CCS golf — Clovis Christian stepped up a few notches in competition on Monday, finishing last in the eight-team Shootout in the Desert golf tournament at Canyon Club G.C. in Albuquerque.

Canyon Club will be the site of this year’s Class 1-2A state tournament. CCS is the defending 1-2A champion.

Albuquerque Academy won the event with a score of 309, two strokes ahead of La Cueva. The Eagles finished at 369.

Junior Carter Teune led the Eagles with a round of 45-45 — 90 while the team’s other four players — sophomores Noah McKay and Bodee Bratcher and juniors Caleb Van Beek and Austin Lingnau — all finished at 93.
