More art on way to Clovis downtown

Look for more artworks to grace the streets of downtown Clovis by the beginning of summer.

Lisa Pellegrino Spear, executive director of Clovis Main Street, says 15 pieces, metal art plants from creator Holly Felice, will arrive by early summer for placement in the pots on downtown Clovis street corners.

"I love art," Spear said. "I believe art is such an important driver for community pride and tourism. It tells a story. It impacts people differently.

Last month marked the one year anniversary of the installation of kinetic wind sculptures at various points along Main St. downtown.

Spear's inspiration for working to get the sculptures for downtown came from a vacation trip to Pagosa Springs, Colo. She saw a kinetic wind sculpture at a shop there.

"I thought it would be an incredible piece to have in our community," Spear said. "It would highlight our community resource: The wind."

Spear said money for purchasing the works came from capital outlay funding from Santa Fe with the help of area representative Randy Crowder.

The wind sculptures were created by the Texas artist LaPaso. Spear says the Clovis collection is the largest assemblage of the artist's kinetic wind sculptures.

Funding for the new art will be coming from the same grant as the wind sculptures.

Even more artwork may appear in downtown Clovis according to Spear.

"We are hoping to work with some property owners on an alley art project," Spear said.

"We are working with the Clovis Community College welding department on creating metal pieces for downtown and the railroad district," she said.

Spear welcomes new ideas in art for downtown Clovis.

"We are always looking for artists who have ideas, supplies, creative minds to help us further art downtown," Spear said.
