CLAYTON — Texico’s baseball team began District 6-2A action on Monday with a 19-0 victory over Clayton.
The second game of the scheduled twin bill was suspended by darkness with the Wolverines (5-4 overall) leading 9-1 in the middle of the fifth. The teams plan to finish it prior to their third and final scheduled meeting when the Yellowjackets visit Texico on April 23, Wolverines coach Todd Kuykendall said.
Junior Tristan Chavez worked all five innings of Game 1, shortened by the 10-run rule. He threw 56 pitches, allowing just one hit with one walk and seven strikeouts.
Senior Jonathan Herrell and Tristan Lucero led Texico’s attack, both going 3-for-3. Herrell had a triple and a walk while Lucero collected a double and a hit-by-pitch.
Meantime, brothers Jadyn and Kyle Gonser each had two hits and scored twice. Kyle drove in two runs and also walked, while Jadyn doubled and knocked in one run.
Texico was slated to host a three-team event on Friday and Saturday, also including Portales and Texico. The Wolverines’ next outing is in district play on Tuesday at Santa Rosa.
