Area facilities to offer women's healthcare

Regional healthcare facilities are stepping up to help with women’s medical care following news that Clovis’ Women’s Medical Center is closing June 10.

WMC recently announced its closure after the death of founder Dr. Bruce Cross, the retirement of Dr. William Moore and difficulty in recruiting a replacement obstetrician/gynecologist.

In WMC’s Facebook post regarding the closure, five facilities were listed that would address healthcare needs: Women’s Medical Center has two facilities in Lubbock and two in Roswell, while Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis will start its own women’s care service in the coming months. A PRMC news release stated two new physicians have already been hired to focus on obstetrics and gynecological care, including prenatal, birthing and postnatal care.

The release included a statement from Jorge Cruz, PRMC’s hospital chief executive.

“Ensuring access to women’s care is critical for our community,” Cruz said. “We are honored to continue this important service and hope to provide a seamless transition for patients.”

PRMC opened in 1975 and in that time, according to the release, staff and providers have helped deliver thousands of babies and care for thousands of women in partnership with local women’s healthcare providers. “PRMC is committed to continuing that care for many years to come,” the release stated.
