Buffalo calf born at Ned Houk

A recently born buffalo calf brings the city of Clovis' buffalo population at Ned Houk Park to nine.

Russell Hooper, director of the Clovis Parks and Recreation department, says this is the second buffalo born in the past year at the park north of Clovis.

"We didn't even know she was pregnant," Hooper said of the mother.

Hooper said the calf was born April 23, saying it was the day after the "big fire" that burned some northern acreage of Ned Houk park.

What's the calf's gender? How much does it weigh?

Nobody knows yet, according to Hooper because the mother won't let anyone near the calf.

"She's super protective," Ned Houk park superintendent Bryan Harris said.

Hooper said the mother is taking "real good care" of the calf because it is healthy and looks like it's feeding well.
