ENMU selects Greatest Greyhounds

PORTALES - Justin Manyweather and Jasmine Gannon have been named the Greatest Greyhounds for the 2021-22 athletic season, according to a news release from Eastern New Mexico University.

Manyweather, a football player, is the 77th Male Greatest Greyhound; Gannon, a volleyball player, is the 42nd Female Greatest Greyhound.

The Greatest Greyhound awards date to 1940-41 on the men's side and 1978-79 on the women's side. They represent student-athletes who display the highest degree of athletic achievement, academic success, leadership qualities, community involvement and positive representation of ENMU, the news release stated.

The award is voted on by ENMU head coaches and administrative staff.

Justin Manyweather ended his Greyhound career with a phenomenal season as the leading receiver and kick returner for Eastern. The Los Angeles native is the fourth ENMU football student-athlete to receive the Greatest Greyhound honor in the last five awards.

The senior paced the Hounds with a season high 751 receiving yards, 11 receiving touchdowns, and 48 receptions. In the return game, Manyweather picked up 322 kick-return yards with one kick-return touchdown and 131 punt-return yards.

He hauled in over 100 receiving yards in four games including a career-best 246 yards and 15 catches against Western New Mexico, where he was named Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week..

He was recognized as the LSC Receiver of the Year and named to the LSC All-Conference Offense First Team in 2021. During the season, Manyweather led all receivers in the conference with 75.1 receiving yards per game (YD/G) and 11 receiving touchdowns.

Jasmine Gannon capped off a four-season career with the Greyhounds as the team's leader on offense and defense in 2021. She is the first volleyball student-athlete to receive the honor since Lauryn Frye won the award in 2016 and 2017.

In 2021, the Clovis native led the Greyhounds in kills (284), kills per set (2.93 k/s), points (333.0), points per set (3.43), and digs (268). The outside hitter also posted 27 service aces, 0.28 service aces per set, and 2.76 digs per set.

Gannon recorded more than 10 kills on 15 occasions.

In the LSC, Gannon finished the 2021 season as one of the top offensive players in the conference, earning All-LSC Second team. She finished 13th in the conference for both points (333.0) and kills per set (2.93), 21st in service aces per set (0.28), and 30th in hitting percentage (.229).

In her career, Gannon has been awarded several honors from the Lone Star Conference being named to the All-LSC First Team and All-Academic Team in 2018, the All-Tournament team in 2018 and 2021, and landing on the LSC Commissioner's Honor Roll seven times.

Manyweather and Gannon will each be honored at the annual Hall of honors banquet that will take place on a date to be determined.
