Pages past, July 20: Heavy rains flood region

On this date …

1972: Regional rainfall totals had ranged from 1 to 7 inches over the previous 24 hours.

Heaviest reports were between Floyd and Melrose.

Panny Bigler said she’d recorded 7 inches of moisture on her farm 3 miles west and 10 miles south of Melrose. A neighbor, Marvin Fowler, recorded 6 inches a short distance to the north, the Clovis News-Journal reported.

Bigler said the heavy rains had not damaged any crops, but water was running in torrents across the Floyd to Melrose highway. She said water running through a small draw that crosses the highway was at least a quarter-mile wide.

She said a number of wire fences in the area had been torn down by the rushing water.

In the village of Melrose, Grady Bright reported he’d recorded 4.2 inches in 24 hours, with no hail or high winds. Grady reported 4.3 inches.

Other area rainfall totals: 2.07 inches north of Fort Sumner, one inch in Portales, about ½ inch in Clovis and .06 of an inch in Elida.

Most of the region had seen less than 4 inches of rain the first 6 ½ months of the year.
