Rare documents, books on display at ENMU

Rare and antique documents are now on display at Eastern New Mexico University's Golden Student Success Center (GSSC).

The arrival of the display is the reason for a reception celebrating the exhibit Sept. 16 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and the public is invited.

According to a news release from ENMU's vice-president of marketing and communications John Houser, The Remnant Trust is a public educational foundation which shares a collection of manuscripts and works dealing with individual liberty and human dignity.

One of the reasons for the display is for the purpose of elevating educational standards.

With The Remnant Trust the GSSC now has access to 15 items in the exhibit.

Included in the items: A leaf from the Gospel of Matthew published in 1536, works by Thomas Aquinas from the 1400s, and an issue of the Massachusetts Magazine published in 1790.

With library supervision the public may physically handle and inspect the documents.

Conditions of handling the documents require individual appointments or class tours for those who wish to have a personal experience with history.

Viewing the items, seeing the display, is free and open to the public, according to Houser.

Houser writes, "By sharing these documents and ideas in their original form, The Remnant Trust hopes to increase the public's understanding of individual liberty and how these ideas helped form this nation."

Laura Wight, director of the GSSC said holding history in your hands, being transported to another time and events that shaped our modern intellectual and social culture through the written word is incredibly impactful.
