Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Good weekend for living in eastern New Mexico on way

We have one of those weekends on the way that perfectly explains why I love living in eastern New Mexico: a glorious jumble of activities with something for all ages and plenty of diverse interests.

Here are a few of the highlights.

The action kicks off Thursday at 7 p.m. with a free showing of “Clifford, the Big Red Dog” in one of Portales’ newest venues, 311 Entertainment, easy to find since it’s handily located at 311 South Main Street.

The showing is scheduled to be on the patio, and so far, the weather looks favorable. Bring your own lawn chairs and blankets to this Chamber of Commerce-sponsored family movie.

Friday and Saturday, you can warm your heart and support some enthusiastic horsemen and horsewomen at the Special Olympics state equestrian competition housed in the comfy confines of the Curry County Events Center, 1900 E. Brady Ave., Clovis.

Competition runs from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, and the public is encouraged to come out and support the Olympians.

The Clovis-Portales Association of Realtors is hosting two weekend events to benefit Casa Esperanza and Operation Phoenix Outdoors.

Casa Esperanza provides a place in Albuquerque for patients and/or their families to stay during times of prolonged medical treatments, while Operation Phoenix Outdoors offers healing outdoor adventures for active military, veterans, and first responders.

In an attempt to beat the heat, both of the events have late afternoon start times: a 4 p.m.(Central Time) golf scramble at the Farwell Golf Course, 51 Country Club Drive, Farwell, on Friday, and a 5 p.m. 5K run/walk on Saturday starting at the old pro shop by the Hillcrest Park walking trail, 1001 Sycamore Street, Clovis.

To learn more about either of those events, reach out to the Realtors at [email protected] or 575-762-4608.

This is also fiesta weekend at St. Helen Church in Portales, and there will be plenty of good food (which I personally and highly recommend), live music, games, and more from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. Los Marios will be playing for a free dance from 7-11 p.m. Saturday. All events take place on the church grounds, 1600 S. Ave. O, Portales.

The Clovis Desert Cruzers are hosting the 25th annual Run to Hillcrest Rod Run and Show-n-Shine starting at 9 a.m. Saturday at Hillcrest Park. All street driven vehicles are welcome to participate in the day-long event.

Clovis-Carver Public Library is adding another notch to its Chautauqua belt with an 11 a.m. Saturday performance titled “Notorious RBG,” a presentation on the life of the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

I’m a sucker for Chautauqua productions and I’ve never been to a bad one. Saturday’s will feature Dianne Layden in character as Ginsburg in a production made possible in part by the New Mexico Humanities Council.

Whether or not you are a Ginsburg fan, you are guaranteed to come away with a better understanding of the remarkable life she lived.

Finally, live music is on tap for the “Concert Under the Stars” at Oasis State Park from 5:30-10:30 p.m. Saturday, a benefit event for the Friends of Oasis. Regular park admission of $5 will be charged, and donations are encouraged to help a group dedicated to keeping our local state park a special place.

Musicians who are slated to perform include Bonded Out, RockSalt, Allen Valdez, and Phillip Vigil Music. Attendees are encouraged to bring picnics and lawn chairs for this family friendly event.

For even more weekend activities, the Eastern New Mexico News maintains an ongoing events calendar that may be accessed by visiting https://www.easternnewmexiconews.com/, then searching for “events calendar.”

Whatever you do, don’t complain that there’s nothing to do around here this weekend. I might have to smack you with a rolled-up newspaper.
