Farwell dominant en route to 49-0 win over Sundown

FARWELL - Sundown had been a real thorn in Farwell's side over the past two seasons.

The Steers, though, got a measure of revenge on Friday night by dealing the Roughnecks a 49-0 setback behind three touchdowns and 164 yards rushing from junior Corey Stancell.

Easily, it was the most impressive performance of the early season for the Steers (3-0), who had lost three times to the Roughnecks in the past two campaigns - including a six-overtime loss at Sundown last year and a playoff defeat in 2020.

"It was fun," fourth-year coach Darren Kelley said. "Really, if we hold onto the football, we're going to be fine.

"Sundown is so good. (Almost) every team we play is a (potential) playoff team."

The Steers' defense forced seven turnovers and pretty much shut down the Roughnecks (1-2). Sundown went three-and-out on its first two possessions and didn't get a first down until the middle of the second quarter.

"I thought they would be a little bigger and come out a lot harder," said Stancell, who scored on runs of 1 yard in the first quarter and 11 yards in both the third and fourth stanzas. He also had one of Farwell's two interceptions.

Stancell capped a 12-play, 83-yard drive with his first touchdown early in the second quarter. The Steers then recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and Actkinson found senior Walker Williams on a 15-yard scoring play at the 6:39 mark.

Actkinson ran one in from 13 yards out late in the half, and the Steers never looked back. He finished 6-of-12 for 81 yards and two touchdowns, and added 83 yards on the ground.

Meantime, the Steers limited Sundown to just eight first downs and 111 total yards.

"I don't know what to say about our defense," Stancell said. "They've played well every quarter so far this year."

Kelley is also pleased with that side of the ball. The Steers have given up just 27 points so far, most of it coming in a 27-21 win at New Deal in their opener.

"We've played well (on defense) for three straight weeks," he said.

The Steers visit borderline rival Texico on Friday.
