PHS volleyball team wins over Lady Warriors

PORTALES — Portales High’s volleyball team quickly got off the schneid at home on Tuesday night.

After dropping their only previous outing at the Ram Athletic Center against Roswell High on Sept. 5, the Lady Rams bounced back with a 25-19, 25-17, 25-20 sweep of Ruidoso on Tuesday night at the RAC.

“It was our first win in our home gym,” second-year PHS coach Jacki Bailey said. “It was nice to bounce back after the loss to Roswell last week.”

While the Lady Rams (4-3) were in control most of the way, they did have a bit of a slow start in Game 3, falling behind 4-0 to the Lady Warriors (0-4).

“We had to come back in that game a little bit,” Bailey said.

Freshman Skyler Massey posted a personal-best 12 kills for Portales, while junior Olivia Low contributed six kills and five blocks and junior Alondra Acosta had 12 digs.

PHS is slated for a return match at Roswell High on Monday.

Ruidoso 6, PHS 0 (girls soccer, Thursday) — Senior forward Itzel Parga tallied five goals for the Lady Warriors (7-1), giving her nine goals in two matchups with the Lady Rams (0-6-1). Earlier, she scored four goals in a 5-0 victory at the PHS pitch.

“We’re young,” Lady Rams coach Bonnie Britton said. “Our roster only has three seniors and two juniors. We’re playing in the big leagues, and we’re not quite ready for it.”

Sophomore forward/midfielder Alexx Chavez had Ruidoso’s other goal, coming in the first half.

On Tuesday the Lady Rams play Clovis High’s junior varsity in Clovis. They face Academy for Technology & The Classics on Saturday in Santa Fe in a rematch of the team’s earlier 1-1 tie at PHS.
