Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Pages past, Oct. 10: Camille Vohs named Woman of the Year

On this date …

1957: Camille Vohs had been honored as Woman of the Year by the Clovis Business and Professional Women’s Club.

The purpose of the award was to recognize outstanding women in the community who had also been active in business or professional fields, the Clovis News-Journal reported.

Vohs “is well known in Clovis and surrounding communities as a woman who gives tirelessly and selflessly to the advancement and progress of the community to which she belongs,” the newspaper reported.

She was a longtime chairman of the Curry County War Bond Drive, for which she was recognized by President Harry Truman.

Other volunteer work included her role as a Gray Lady with the local Red Cross and she had received a special award from the Finnish Relief Fund for her aid to the stricken population of Finland. She was past president of the Clovis Woman’s Club, which promoted higher education, social, moral and civic conditions, and she was known for “graphic book reviews,” according to family members.

Vohs, born in France, spent most of her adult life in Clovis. She died in 1987 at age 93 and is buried in Mission Garden of Memories.
