PRMC official: Latest COVID-19 booster available

The most recent booster designed to combat the Coronavirus is now available, said Amy Kelley, retail pharmacy supervisor at the Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis.

The medical center pharmacy started administering the doses of the vaccine three weeks ago, Kelley said. The shot is called the omicron or bivalent booster for the Coronavirus.

“We’ve been giving about 60 or 70 (doses) a week at the PRMC Pharmacy,” she said.

Once someone has had their primary shots –first and second—in one brand, they can take this booster two months after whatever the brand their last shot was, she said.

“We recommend you stay up to date with shots and boosters, particularly now that we are going into the flu season,” she said. “You can get your booster with the flu shot.”

This booster is available for anyone 12 years of age and older, she said. It is especially recommended for “those most at risk, those older individuals and those with other health conditions.”

PRMC is taking walk-ins in the morning with no appointment necessary, she said. The hospital offers a dedicated vaccine clinic on Tuesday mornings from 9-11:30 am in the pharmacy building on the south side of the PRMC campus.

Anyone can make appointments for wherever the booster is offered on the vaccinenm.org website, she added.

PRMC is only offering the Moderna brand, she said. After taking the same brand for the first two shots, people can change to a different brand.

“The side effects of this booster are the same or very similar to previous shots, to include low-grade fever, injection site soreness, headaches, and/or tiredness, which are all possible --usually in the first 24 hours,” she said.

The News contacted Roosevelt General Hospital for comment several times with a group of questions. The hospital did not respond by press time.
