Lady Rams fall to Friona, Highland Park

FRIONA — Portales High’s volleyball squad stepped across the state line to face a couple of rugged foes on Saturday, losing to Amarillo Highland Park 25-21, 25-13, 25-23 and to Friona 12-25, 24-26, 25-14, 25-22.

Despite the setbacks, coach Jacki Bailey said she thought the Lady Rams (6-10) competed fairly well.

“It’s not the result we wanted for sure, but we played well in (large) spurts,” Bailey said. “Highland Park is really good, and Friona is solid.”

In the opener against the Lady Hornets (17-4 after beating Friona), junior Olivia Low had nine kills while junior Audrey Paden and freshman Skyler Massey collected seven apiece. Meantime, senior Maebri Knox posted a double-double with 19 digs and 18 assists, junior Alondra Acosta also had 19 digs and sophomore Myleigh Banda notched 16 assists and a team-high five aces.

Against the host Squaws (13-6), Massey had eight kills, Low compiled six kills and four blocks, Acosta picked up 17 digs and three aces and Knox added 27 assists.

“We’re playing a tough schedule,” Bailey said. “In most of our tournaments, we’ve played in the Gold (winners) Bracket, so we’ve played the tougher teams.”

Portales was set to face Texico on Tuesday night at the Ram Athletic Center in the teams’ third meeting this fall. PHS begins District 4-4A play next Tuesday at Roswell Goddard.

Riess posts win at Ruidoso — Portales High’s Michael Riess claimed boys individual honors on Saturday in the Ruidoso Invitational cross country meet.

Riess posted a 3-mile time of 17 minutes, 18.89 seconds, while sophomore Kadence Reeves led the PHS girls with a 12th-place finish in 24:55.65. Neither the Rams nor Lady Rams had a full squad, each with three competitors.

Lovington took boys team honors with 22 points to 52 for runnerup Organ Mountain, while on the girls’ side Organ Mountain won a sixth-runner tiebreaker over Silver to capture team honors with 41 points. Capitan’s Evelyn Daugherty claimed the girls individual crown with a time of 22:52.62.

Next up for PHS runners is the City of Natural Lakes Invite on Oct. 22 at Santa Rosa.

Rams’ match postponed — Portales High’s District 4-4A boys soccer match against Lovington on Saturday was postponed due to wet grounds.

The contest was rescheduled to Tuesday night and was to be played in Lovington. Next up for PHS squads are district matches — Thursday at Roswell Goddard for the boys, Saturday at Artesia for the girls.
