Curry approves green light resolution to honor veterans

Visitors to Curry County businesses and homes may see green lights glowing in the windows through Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

The green lights honor the service and sacrifice of the county’s 4,373 veterans and mark Curry County as a “Green Light for Veterans county” in accordance with a resolution unanimously approved on Oct. 11 by the county commission in association with the National Association of Counties.

County Manager Lance Pyle introduced the resolution on Oct. 11 as part of a regular county commission meeting.

The resolution also recognizes some of the difficulties veterans often face when they leave military service, the text of the resolution reads.

According to the resolution, 44% to72% percent of those who leave military service experience “high levels of stress” during their transition to civilian life.

During this time, veterans are also “at a high risk for suicide,” the resolution reads.

About 200,000 military personnel re-enter civilian life every year and, in the near future, that number could increase by about 20%, the ordinance reads.

The resolution also notes that veterans often continue community service as civilians by participating in the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, religious groups, in civil service jobs, and as county veteran service officers in 29 states.
