Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Funding still available for law enforcement

After delivering more than $40 million last month to 29 law enforcement departments, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced the state is looking for more applicants for the remaining $8.5 million in funding available.

According to a news report from the governor’s office Lujan Grisham said, “We will be reaching out to every agency that did not apply through the first round to invite every community to apply for this critical funding.”.

The 2022 Omnibus Crime Bill appropriated $50 million toward New Mexico law enforcement agencies to recruit additional law enforcement officers, according to the release.

Clovis city manager Justin Howalt said the Clovis police department will receive just over $1.44 million distributed over the next three years.

Curry County manager Lance Pyle said the Sheriff’s Department did not receive any of the initial $41.5 million dollars distributed across the state.

“We are currently reviewing the requirements and available uses of the funding,” Pyle said.

Calls to Portales city management and the Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Department regarding the funding were not returned.
