Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
Clovis' fall "Trek for Trash" happened Saturday morning and the event netted more roadside refuse than last year.
Megan Darrow from the Clovis city manager's office reports 353 bags of trash were collected compared to 333 in 2021.
Darrow said 147 volunteers helped pick up trash.
Some volunteers participated in teams. Awards went to teams that gathered the most garbage.
First place went to Yucca Middle School with 82 bags, second place went to Cannon Federal Credit Union with 65 bags and third place went to Cannon Air Force Base, "16th amu" with 53 bags of trash.
"We also had volunteers from the Junior ROTC team, Silverjack jujitsu and Family Career Community Leaders of America," Darrow said.
Darrow said total tons of trash collected by the landfill from Friday at noon to Monday at noon: 105 tons.
Also collected at the landfill were 76 tires.
Darrow said she spoke with Trek for Trash volunteer Susan Fackler and asked her why Fackler volunteered.
"I heard about it on the radio," Fackler said. "When we moved here four years ago we were really surprised with the winds and how much litter was around and we've always been wanting to pick it up and clean up the city and thought this event was a good time to start."
