LAWTON, Okla. - Staring at near-certain defeat, Eastern New Mexico University's volleyball team erased a late four-point deficit in Game 4, rallying to win the set on three consecutive kills by senior middle blocker Gracelyn Stubbs before posting a 22-25, 25-22, 22-25, 28-26, 16-14 Lone Star Conference victory over Cameron on Friday night.
Stubbs' kills in Game 4 came with the Hounds trailing 26-25. Moments before that, ENMU found itself down 22-18 before making a late comeback.
Cameron (5-21, 0-11 LSC) led 8-5 midway through the fifth, but a kill from junior outside hitter Mikaela Garvin and a bad Aggies set lifted the Hounds (13-12, 4-9 LSC) from a 14-14 tie and denied the Aggies their first conference win. It was also ENMU's ninth consecutive triumph in the series.
The match swung back and forth all night with neither team able to get away from the other.
Several Hounds set season or personal bests in the marathon. Stubbs finished with 18 kills, while junior outside hitter Kali Nelson added a personal-best 14 and Garvin 13.
Senior setter Qitana Sapiga posted a personal-best 31 assists while freshman setter Kayla Ison chipped in 26 helpers.
For the Aggies, junior outside hitter Arianna Navarrette notched 21 kills and 21 digs.
The Hounds were slated to end a six-match road trip on Saturday at rival and 11th-ranked West Texas A&M. They will then be off until hosting Lubbock Christian on Nov. 2 and Western New Mexico on Nov. 4 at Greyhound Arena to wrap up the regular campaign.
Women's soccer - At Greyhound Stadium, sophomore forward Maria-Frances Serrant posted her second hat trick of the season while senior defender Emily Avila added a goal and an assist to lift 15th-ranked West Texas A&M to a 4-1 victory over ENMU on Wednesday.
WT (12-1-2, 6-1-2 LSC) wasted little time taking the lead as Avila scored off a free kick just over four minutes into the contest. Serrant, from Trinidad & Tobago, added two goals before halftime for a 3-0 advantage, then tallied again on an assist from Avila just 19 seconds into the final stanza.
Senior midfielder Samantha Vasquez broke up the shutout with a give-and-go tally from junior forward/midfielder Haley Huff in the 54th minute, the Hounds' only shot on goal in the match. Vasquez had a chance to score again late, only to leave her attempt wide of the mark.
It was the most goals given up this season by the Hounds (4-10-1, 2-7-1), and the first match this fall in which both they and their opponent have scored. Vasquez became the first player with two tallies in 2022 for ENMU, which has just six as a team.
ENMU returns to LSC action on Tuesday with a 6 p.m. (MDT) clash at Lubbock Christian.
Men's soccer - At Tyler, Texas, junior forward Malte Andres scored a pair of goals and Texas-Tyler picked up its first LSC win of the season by beating ENMU 3-0 on Wednesday night.
Andres tallied near the midpoint of the opening segment on assists from senior midfielders Sergio Sola and Brajdi Cekrezi, then added an unassisted goal in the second period to complete the scoring.
The Patriots (6-5-2, 1-4-1 LSC) got a score from senior midfielder Lukas Paulun about three minutes after Maite's first goal.
ENMU (4-7-1, 1-5-0) has dropped four in a row and been outscored 13-0 in the process since inching over the .500 mark with a 1-0 upset of then-No. 8 Midwestern State on Oct. 5 at Greyhound Stadium.
The Hounds were slated to host rival West Texas A&M on Saturday night. Their next tilt is slated for Wednesday in the team's 4 p.m. home finale against Texas A&M International at Greyhound Stadium.
