TEXICO — Six members of the Class 2A state runners-up Texico Wolverines, including sophomore Taye Smith on both sides of the ball, were chosen to the All-District 4-2A football first team in selections released this week.
Smith was selected as a tackle on offense and a lineman on defense, and was also chosen the district’s player of the year on defense. Others named to the first-team offense were sophomore running back Alex Fuentes, junior slot receiver Kyle Gonser, sophomore guard Warren Schooley and junior center Oscar Estrada on offense, and junior Cade Figg in the secondary on defense.
Figg was chosen to the second-team offense at quarterback, while Fuentes at linebacker and Gonser at outside linebacker, Schooley in the defensive line and freshman Bryce Cooper at inside linebacker earned second team on defense.
Nine players were accorded honorable mention — juniors Daltyn Cain at receiver and Erik Davalos at tight end, and freshmen Branson Willoughby at tackle and Ryan Timberlake at guard on offense, and Davalos at linebacker, Timberlake in the defensive line, junior Adi Garcia and sophomore Missael Buendia in the secondary, and sophomore Cole Essex at inside linebacker.
Texico finished the season 9-4, losing in Friday’s championship game to undefeated district rival Jal 41-21.
Farwell lands 11 on first-team all-district — Farwell earned 11 berths on the Texas District 3-2A all-district team this week, including junior Corey Stancell (running back and defensive back) on both sides of the ball.
Others named to the first team were senior quarterback Alec Actkinson, senior linemen Bud Woods and Andrew Husted, sophomore wide receiver Ryder McElroy and junior tight end Joe Crume on offense, and seniors Zach Crisp and Dustin Dyck in the line, junior Jackson Wilbourn at linebacker and senior Cesar Snyder in the secondary on defense.
Second-team players on offense included junior Jorge Vasquez and senior Corbin Potts in the line, Snyder at wide receiver and Wilbourn at placekicker on offense, and Woods and Vasquez in the line, McElroy at linebacker and sophomore Alonzo Lozano in the secondary on defense.
Farwell (9-3) dropped an area (second-round) matchup to Sonora 19-7 on Friday at Big Spring.
