Texico posts sweep against Mescalero in opening twin bill

TEXICO — Four players combined for 34 points on Monday night as Texico’s girls opened their season with a 43-33 victory over Mescalero.

Texico’s boys completed the sweep in their opener, handing the Chiefs a 63-38 loss in the second half of the twin bill. The games were also the first of the season for Mescalero.

Senior Emma Whalen and sophomore Desiree Holman had nine points each for the Lady Wolverines, while senior Maya Holman and junior Kaya New scored eight apiece. Texico built a 25-15 halftime lead and played the Lady Chiefs even in the second half.

Mescalero’s high scorer was senior Ivonna Burgess with 19 points.

Texico’s boys ran away to a 20-point halftime lead and cruised to victory behind 28 points from senior Jahvon Askew. Senior Ayden Carey added 14 points for the Wolverines, while junior Cade Figg chipped in 10.

Junior Darius Wheeler had 12 points and senior Maekquin Fossum tossed in 10 for the Chiefs.

Texico’s squads will be in action in tournaments out west this weekend. At Cliff, the boys take on Hatch Valley at 6 p.m. on Thursday in a quarterfinal matchup, then play either Lordsburg or Mountainair in Friday’s semifinals, with the final round set for Saturday.

The girls travel to Lordsburg for a six-team event, featuring two three-team pools on Thursday and Friday and final-round matchups on Saturday. The Lady Wolverines face Lordsburg at 7 p.m. on Thursday and Cliff at 5:30 p.m. on Friday in their pool games.
