Tuesday preps: Bronchos stave off Elida for 77-71 win

ELIDA — The Grady Bronchos rode a three-pronged attack on Tuesday night to earn a 77-71 victory over Elida in the boys season opener for both squads.

Junior Zane Rush (21) and sophomores Deakin Ragland (20) and Jax Piepkorn (15) provided more than 70 percent of the scoring. They combined for 19 fourth-quarter points to help maintain the lead, a period which ended with the Tigers outscoring Grady 28-27, and finished the night a combined 25-for-31 from the foul line.

Trailing 33-30, the Bronchos moved in front with a 23-14 scoring edge in the third frame. 

Senior Jose Jimenez funneled in 33 points for Elida, including 13 in the final stanza, while his brother Seth added 15.

In other area boys tilts on Tuesday:

Clovis Christian 54, Roy/Mosquero 36 — The homestanding Eagles withstood some struggles during the game, but stayed in control after outscoring the Blue 11-2 in the opening period in the opener for both squads.

Senior Noah Gershon scored nine of his game-high 22 points to help the Eagles get off to a 9-0 start. He finished with three 3-pointers, while senior Carter Teune scored all 15 of his points after halftime on five 3-pointers.

Sophomores Ayden Clavel (18) and Jackson Fudge (16) accounted for all but two of Roy/Mosquero’s points.

Bovina 56, Silverton 43 — At Bovina, the Mustangs led most of the way to square their record for the season at 1-1.

Senior Ceasar Amaya was the lone player in double digits for Bovina with 21 points.

Childress 53, Farwell 33 — In a neutral-site match played at Tulia, the Class 3A Bobcats (2-0) bolted to a 28-15 halftime lead and were never threatened.

JaMarcus Hampton led Childress with 24 points, while Stephon Harris tossed in 15 and Alex Sauceda added 12. For Farwell (2-1), junior Corey Stancell led the way with 14 points.

In girls Tuesday action:

Dora 41, San Jon JV 15 — Dora cruised behind a 20-point second quarter to beat visiting San Jon, which is playing a junior varsity-only schedule this season.

Sophomore Justice Deason tallied 13 points, junior Bre’Ann Rodriguez had 11 and freshman Dakota Jones added 10 in Dora’s season opener. High scorer for the San Jon JV was junior Sarah Archuleta with nine.

Grady 35, Elida 16 — At Elida, the Lady Bronchos got off to a 10-3 lead after one quarter and subdued the Lady Tigers.

Sophomore Juanita Ramirez led the way for Grady with 13 points. High scorers for Elida with four points each were freshman Hattie Bilbrey and junior Taylea Nelson.

Gruver 47, Farwell 39 — In a neutral-floor game played at Amarillo’s Tascosa H.S., the Lady Greyhounds remained unbeaten for the season at 3-0 by turning back the Lady Blue.

Senior Charlie Trimble scored 12 points and sophomore Makylee Baldwin added 11 for Farwell (3-3).

Lockney 61, Muleshoe 49 — The host Lady Longhorns (6-4) opened a 15-8 lead at the quarter and kept the Lady Mules (5-4) at bay the rest of the way.

Senior Adrianna Villarreal poured in 32 points for Lockney, while senior Mariah Ascensio added 16. Muleshoe was led by 16 points from senior Kylie Hernandez, while senior Aaliyah Sanchez chipped in eight.

In another girls matchup on Tuesday at Bovina, Amarillo River Road defeated the Fillies 51-43.
