PREP BOYS: Masini, Dora top Logan in tourney final

DORA — Senior Steven Masini scored 26 points and Dora’s boys won their own J.P. Stone Invitational for the first time on Saturday night with a 49-37 victory over Logan.

The Coyotes (4-0) jumped out to a 12-2 lead at the quarter, only to see the Longhorns (2-1) pull to within a point at halftime. Dora then went on a 15-4 run in the third quarter and played Logan even over the final eight minutes.

Senior Conner Rooney added eight points for the Coyotes. Logan’s leading scorer was junior Brock Burns with 10 points.

Also on Saturday, Roy/Mosquero (2-2) took the third-place game with a 58-55 victory over Elida (1-3).

In other area boys tournaments:

Cliff Roundup — Texico finished second to the host Cowboys, losing in Saturday’s championship game 70-47.

After a tight first half, Cliff (5-0) pulled away by outscoring the Wolverines 21-8 in the third stanza. Freshman Brennan Shock poured in 27 points for the Cowboys while senior Coy Judd finished with 19.

For Texico (3-1), senior Jahvon Askew tallied 16 points, while junior Colton Figg contributed nine.

On Friday, the Wolverines advanced to the finals with a 77-63 victory over Lordsburg.

Askew scored 30 points and Figg 13 for the Wolverines, who led 22-13 at the quarter and stayed in control most of the way. For the Mavericks (2-2), who defeated Cloudcroft for third place on Saturday, Ramon Ochoa tallied 25 points and Zeke DeLao added 23.

American Bank tournament, Melrose — After finishing second in last year’s event, the host Buffaloes regained their tourney title with a 57-51 victory in Saturday’s finals against Clayton.

Sophomore Cy Draper had 16 points and junior Michael Cardonita 11 for the Buffs (3-0), who erased a 1-point halftime deficit with a 19-10 blitz in the third stanza. Sophomores Brayden Eldridge and Josiah Roybal followed with 9 and 8 points, respectively.

Clayton (4-1) was led by 17 points from senior Rylan Ruf and 10 from junior Jonoven Hidalgo.

In consolation finals, Tatum edged Grady 43-41 for third place while Hagerman posted a 55-34 triumph over Floyd in the fifth-place matchup

Tatum (2-2) outscored Grady 14-4 in the second stanza to build a six-point lead, but the Coyotes had to hold on late for the win.

Junior Spencer Whitman scored 11 points and senior Mason Brown added 10 for Tatum, while junior Zane Rush led all scorers with 24 points for Grady (2-2), including a pair of 3s and 6-of-8 from the foul line.

In the fifth-place matchup, Floyd kept the margin inside 10 points until the final period when they Bobcats (2-1) outscored them 15-3. Sophomore Jevon Aguilar netted 26 points and junior Jaime Arebalos chipped in 18 for Hagerman, while the Broncos (1-2) were paced by senior Brayan Gallegos with 13.

Steer Stampede, Magdalena — Clovis Christian played defending Class 1A state champion Magdalena close for a half, but the Eagles (2-1) came up short and dropped a 51-37 decision to the host Steers in Saturday’s championship tilt.

CCS trailed 21-20 at the intermission before Mag (3-0) went on an 18-9 run over the third canto. Senior D’Shaun Vinyard scored 18 points and senior Kael Stephens added 11 for the Steers, while senior Carter Teune with 15 points and senior Noah Gershon and junior Jaden Martinez with 11 apiece accounted for all of the Eagles’ scoring.

On Friday, CCS routed Reserve 63-9 in the semifinals, leading 28-2 at the quarter and then blanking the Mountaineers (2-2) over the middle two frames. Gershon and senior O.B. Blanco each scored 13 points for Clovis Christian.

Adrian (Texas) tournament — Bovina completed a sweep of the four-team, round-robin event on Saturday with wins over Amarillo Holy Cross 50-19 and the host Madadors 65-33. Seniors Ceasar Amaya netted 13 points and junior Miguel Lopez had 9 for the Mustangs against Holy Cross, and Amaya scored 15 points while senior Darian De La Rosa and juniors Michael Nieto and Daniel Herrera added nine apiece against Adrian.

In Friday’s opener, the Mustangs defeated Vega 64-43 as Amaya with 12 points, senior Nathan Guevara with 10 and junior Miguel Lopez with seven led the way.

DC Shootout, Denver City — Muleshoe (3-2) won two pool games to advance to the winners bracket semifinals before losing to host Denver City 40-21 on Friday. The Mules then dropped a 43-41 decision to Odessa Permian’s junior varsity in the third-place matchup.

Muleshoe, which won at Lockney in its season opener on Nov. 29, beat Midland Texas Leadership Charter Academy 69-11 on Thursday and Big Spring 42-16 on Friday in pool play. Seniors Irvin Torres and Tate Shipman and junior Sebastian Kirven all had eight points for the Mules in Thursday’s clash, while junior Adam Alarcon scored 13, senior Eliasar Cisneros 10 and Kirven eight against Big Spring.
