The city of Clovis has issued a wind-chill warning until 11 a.m. Friday.
"Very cold wind chills expected," the city reported. "Wind chills dropping to around 20 below zero ..."
Forecasters said northern Quay County could see wind-chill factors of 25 below zero at times between 5 a.m. Thursday and 11 a.m. Friday.
Officials said the temperatures could result in frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.
The National Weather Service is predicting a low temperature of 7 degrees Wednesday night in the Clovis-Portales area. Thursday's high is forecast at 16 degrees, with a low of 2. Friday's high will be near 19 degrees with a low of 9, NWS predicts. Winds could gust over 40 mph at times during the cold spell.
