Texico teams reach semis in EPAC meet; CCS wins

LOGAN – First-round games in the Eastern Plains Athletic Conference basketball tournament were completed on Thursday.

On the boys’ side, Texico slipped past Melrose 52-48 and Logan defeated Grady 86-73. In the girls’ bracket, it was Texico over Dora 42-23 and Logan getting past Grady 62-34.

The final two days of the tournament, including Saturday’s final round, were slated for Texico.

Friday’s boys championship semifinals pitted fourth-seeded Melrose against top-seeded Fort Sumner and No. 2 Dora against third-seeded Logan. In the consolation bracket, it was No. 5 Texico against No. 8 Floyd and seventh-seeded Elida against No. 6 Grady.

Girls championship semis had fourth-seeded Texico against top seed Melrose and No. 2 Fort Sumner against third-seeded Logan. In the consolation bracket, No. 5 Dora faced eighth-seeded Floyd and No. 7 Elida took on No. 6 Grady.

In boys action on Thursday:

Texico 52, Melrose 48 – The Wolverines (9-4) erased a six-point deficit by outscoring the Buffaloes 15-5 in the final stanza.

Senior Jahvon Askew led the way for Texico with 14 points, while senior Max Villarreal and junior Cade Figg chipped in eight apiece. For the Buffs (7-3), junior Blake Curtis had three 3-pointers and 17 points and sophomore Brayden Eldridge finished with nine points.

Logan 86, Grady 73 – The Longhorns (10-3) won a shootout, getting a combined 12 3-pointers from five players. Junior Brock Burns had five trifectas and 21 points, while senior Park Strong scored 20 points and junior Kaeden Stoner and sophomore Diego Sanchez chipped in 10 apiece.

For the Bronchos (3-4), junior Zane Rush notched four 3s and 32 points, while senior Carlos Marin and eighth-grader Zander Ciancio each tossed in 11.

On the girls’ side:

Texico 42, Dora 23 – The Lady Wolverines (6-7) ran out to a 25-9 halftime lead and cruised as senior Catelyn Breshears and Maya Holman each hit a pair of 3s and finished with 10 and eight points, respectively. For the Lady Coyotes (8-5), junior Faith Jasso collected 11 points.

Logan 62, Grady 34 – Ten players scored for the Lady Longhorns (9-5), led by freshman Desta Rose with 14 points and junior Liz Horner with 13. Top scorers for the Lady Bronchos (3-4) were

In boys contests on Wednesday:

Dora 66, Elida 43 – The Coyotes (10-1) opened a 16-9 lead at the quarter and steadily pulled away from their Roosevelt County rivals.

Six-foot-5 senior Steven Masini led the way for Dora with 31 points, while junior Cole Kircher added 15. For the Tigers (3-7), senior Jose Jimenez knocked in 15 points.

Fort Sumner 55, Floyd 12 – The Foxes wasted no time running away with this one, leading 22-3 at the quarter.

Juniors Seth Saiz and Joaquin Segura led a balanced attack for Fort Sumner (9-2) with 12 points, while 6-7 junior Cash Burney chipped in 10 tallies and eighth-grader Jordan Holland added nine. For the Broncos (3-6), junior Benton Cain and freshman Edwin Gallegos notched five points apiece.

In Wednesday girls tilts:

Fort Sumner 55, Elida 20 – The Lady Tigers (1-8) hung close for a quarter, trailing 10-6, before Fort Sumner began to steadily pull away.

Senior Olivia Lucero tallied 20 points and senior Jordan Hisel pitched in 18 for the Vixens (7-4), while sophomore Allyssa Casaus had eight. Elida got eight and six points, respectively, from freshmen Hattie Bilbrey and Charity Smith.

Melrose 56, Floyd 11 – The Lady Buffs (10-1) opened a 24-0 first-quarter lead and cruised to victory over the Lady Broncos.

Ten players scored for Melrose, topped by junior Graci Odom with 11 and senior Rylee Roberts with nine, while sophomore Nevaeha Brown accounted for nine points for Floyd (2-5).

CCS beats Loving in tourney – Clovis Christian’s boys built a comfortable lead through three quarters and subdued Loving 57-47 on Thursday in the Jal Invite, a four-team round-robin.

The Eagles (10-2) rode 17 points from senior Carter Teune and 15 apiece from senior Noah Gershon and junior Jaden Martinez to the victory. For the Falcons (1-6), junior Gio Ruiz netted 16 points and senior Devin Pena 11.
