TUESDAY PREPS: Eagles dedicate new gym with win over Tatum

CLOVIS – Clovis Christian’s boys dedicated their new on-campus gymnasium on Tuesday night with a 51-42 triumph over Tatum.

The Eagles (9-2) got off to a slow start, trailing the Coyotes 22-8 late in the quarter, but they held Tatum (4-8) to just 20 points the rest of the way and pushed in front with a 17-4 third-period surge.

Senior Carter Teune posted three 3-pointers and 23 points and senior Noah Gershon added 13 for CCS. The Eagles were 14-of-17 from the foul line, with Carter going 7-for-7 and Gershon 7-for-8.

Senior Mason Brown led Tatum with 13 points, followed by senior David Mendoza with 12.

In other area action on Tuesday:

Steers, Lady Blue take nailbiters – Farwell’s basketball teams down-to-the-wire encounters at Nazareth, the Steers winning 51-50 while the Lady Blue earned a 41-39 decision over the Swiftettes.

The Steers (14-4) trailed most of the way, but took a one-point lead inside the final two minutes on two free throws by senior Adrian Nunez. Then, up three with eight seconds left, the Swifts (8-5) looked for a potential tying 3-pointer but instead settled for a tip-in at the buzzer.

Junior Corey Stancell led Farwell with a pair of 3-pointers and 23 points, while senior Alec Actkinson added 14. Sophomore Kayle Rogers scored 20 points for Naz, ranked No. 10 in Texas Class 1A by MaxPreps.

Meantime, the Lady Blue (19-3) overcame a four-point halftime deficit, taking the lead for good late when Jaelyn Smith stole the ball and got it to sophomore Makylee Baldwin for a layup. Then senior Charlie May Trimble stole the ball shortly before time expired on the final chance for the Swiftettes (9-4), ranked No. 1 in Texas 1A.

Trimble notched 14 points to pace the Lady Blue, followed closely by Baldwin with 13.

Bovina notches pair of wins – At Hart, Bovina’s boys outscored the Longhorns 22-15 in the final stanza and stretched their winning streak to six with a 67-60 victory.

Senior Darian De La Rosa knocked in 20 points and senior Nathan Guevara added two 3-pointers and 12 tallies for the Mustangs (12-6), coming off a five-game sweep over the weekend in Claude’s North Plains Invitational. Eight players scored for Bovina in the winning effort.

Hart (6-7) was led by 19 points from sophomore Dom Dominguez, while junior Ely Hernandez had 18 and sophomore Noah Marin scored 10.

Meantime, Bovina’s girls evened their record at 8-8 with a 67-21 blowout of the Lady Longhorns. Senior Alyssa Marquez posted a personal-best 24 points for the Fillies while junior Destiny Lara had 11.

Hart, meantime, managed four points apiece from junior Toree Evans and sophomore RoyLynn Gonzalez.
