MULESHOE – Muleshoe’s basketball teams picked up victories on Tuesday in District 3-3A clashes against Denver City.
The girls began the doubleheader with a 57-56 squeaker against the Fillies before the Muleshoe boys came away with a 58-42 triumph over the Mustangs.
All 10 players scored for the Lady Mules (11-10, 3-2 district), led by senior Kylie Hernandez with 11 points. Junior Idaly Tarango and sophomore Aubrey Granados chipped in eight apiece.
For Denver City (11-9, 3-2), 6-foot-1 freshman Natalie Ceniceros led the way with 17 points while junior Tori Rodriguez tallied 13.
Muleshoe’s boys pulled away after a 13-13 first-quarter tie. The Mules (6-7, 1-2) were also balanced, with senior Tate Shipman netting 11 points, junior Sebastian Kirven posting a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds and senior Elias Cisneros also funneling in 10 points.
For the Mustangs (11-12, 1-2), senior Erik Escobar finished with a team-high eight points.
In other girls action on Tuesday:
Farwell 67, Bovina 25 – The Lady Blue bounced back from a 13-point District 3-2A loss at Panhandle on Friday to square their district mark.
Senior Jaelyn Smith led a balanced attack for Farwell (21-4 overall) with 13 points while sophomore Landri Richey scored 11. Meantime, junior Aaliyah Garcia topped the Fillies (8-9, 1-1) with six points.
Hondo 29, Floyd 27 – The Lady Broncos were outscored 4-2 in overtime and dropped a tough one to the visiting Lady Eagles (1-8).
Junior Jona Baros led the way for Floyd (2-7) with 15 points, while sophomore Nevaeha Brown added nine.
Also on Tuesday, Hagerman earned a 52-34 victory over Elida.
In other area boys tilts on Tuesday:
Floyd 58, Hondo 38 – At Floyd, the Broncos (4-7) opened a 12-point halftime lead and stayed in command from there.
Junior Isaias Nieto paced the winners with 14 points, while juniors Andrew Essary and Deagan East chipped in 12 and nine, respectively. For the Eagles (1-9), freshman Ismael Ontiveros had 27 points.
Gruver 74, Bovina 48 – A 20-8 start by the homestanding Greyhounds put Bovina in a hole from which it was unable to escape.
Four players reached double digits for Gruver (14-9), led by 20 points from senior Mason Gibson and 16 from 6-5 senior Jefferson Weaver. Junior Colt Mathews and freshman Caden Armes added 10 apiece for the Greyhounds, whose eight 3-pointers included four from Gibson and two from Armes.
Senior Ceasar Amaya had 22 points for Bovina (12-8), followed by junior Miguel Lopez with 10.
