CHS squads sixth in Ruidoso tournament

RUIDOSO – Seven Clovis High wrestlers – four boys and three girls – placed in the top four on Saturday to lead CHS squads to sixth-place team finishes in Ruidoso’s Sierra Blanca Invite.

The host Warriors took team honors among 15 boys squads with 163 points to 158 for Centennial, while the Wildcats came in with 78 ½ points. On the girls’ side, with 11 teams, Carlsbad finished first with 74 points to 51 for runnerup Moriarty, while the Lady Wildcats tallied 29.

Sophomore Yocelyn Romero highlighted the event for Clovis, winning a three-person round-robin in the girls’ 126-pound division with first-period pins of El Paso Eldorado freshman Aliana Acune and Ruidoso senior Mariah Moorhead. Freshman Zulehiny Mendoza claimed third place at 107 with a first-period pin of Moriarty sophomore Isabel Urioste, while sophomore Jordyn Archuleta was fourth in a four-person round-robin at 145, losing by first-period pins to Junior Danica Medina of Carlsbad and senior Liana Fernandez of Las Vegas Robertson before forfeiting due to injury against Roswell High’s Alizae Najera.

For the boys, sophomore Kaell Berry posted the top finish, coming in second at 127 after losing by first-period pin in the finals to Eldorado sophomore Jacob Casillas. Junior Fidel Madrid was fourth at 139, losing in the third-place match to El Dorado senior Gerardo Farpon by second-period fall.

At 172, junior Michael Tree was fifth after beating Roswell High sophomore Jesus Leyva by first-period pin, and senior Semaj Satchel defeated El Dorado sophomore Xavier Mejil by first-period fall in the final round at 215.

This Saturday, the Cats and Lady Cats will be in Albuquerque for the Sartan Scuffle, hosted by St. Pius H.S.
