FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Senior Tamia Smith set an Eastern New Mexico University women’s indoor record in shot put on Friday in Northern Arizona’s season-opening Kick Axe Open track meet.
Smith posted a throw of 43 feet, 10 ¾ inches, good for third place behind Grand Canyon senior Samaria McDonald and Northern Arizona junior Alaina Diggs. The previous school record was 42-2 ¾ by Jenae Wolfram in 2015, and Smith now has four of the top six marks in ENMU history.
“It’s exciting for us and for her to get the program record,” Greyhounds track coach Joshua Harden said. “And it came off a series that did not start off pretty, (but) she was able to mentally prepare herself for that moment and break the record.”
Smith also finished seventh in the weight throw with a distance of 45-7 ¼.
ENMU women had two other top eight finishes – the 1,600 relay with sophomores Kiara Cox and Alisha Hayde and freshmen Mahault Lebrun in 4 minutes, 25.56 seconds, and Lebrun, eighth in the 400 in 1:01.55.
ENMU tracksters return to action on Saturday in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Collegiate Invite at Albuquerque.
