CCS teammates surpass 1,000 career points

CLOVIS – The Clovis Christian boys basketball program now has three 1,000-point scorers, and two of them are still active this season.

Senior guards Carter Teune (1,323), who did it at the end of his junior campaign, and Noah Gershon (1,039) are trailing only 2021 graduate Tyler Lingnau (1,395) in the school's scoring books.

Gershon reached the 1,000-point mark in a victory over Elida on Jan. 13.

"It feels good," Gershon said Monday before CCS took on Dora at the Eagles' new gymnasium, located east of Clovis. "It's a pretty good accomplishment. I hope our next accomplishment is to get to the state tournament."

Both players had a bit of a rough night on Monday, though. Carter finished with 13 points and Gershon was held to nine in a 76-69 loss to the Coyotes in double overtime.

CCS coach Trent McKay said Teune had a small head start against Gershon.

"Carter played a little bit in eighth grade," McKay said. "Both of them have started for four years now, and they're at the top for us in most (statistical) categories.

"Noah is more of a shooter. Carter is more about getting to the basket, although he can shoot 3s."

The Eagles (13-5) have hit a bit of a rough patch, losing two games in three days at home. They face a difficult District 6-1A test on Thursday at Fort Sumner (17-2), but won there last year behind 31 points and eight 3-pointers from Gershon to clinch the district's regular-season crown en route to a semifinal berth in the Class 1A state tournament at Albuquerque.

"That was probably the best game I've ever had," Gershon said. "That was just a game where I was feeling pretty good."

Teune still has a fair chance to run down Lingnau's record this season, but says that's secondary for him.

"I really haven't thought about it," said Teune, adding that he, Gershon and several others on the team have played together since third grade. "I obviously want to win a state championship, but making it to the final four again would be a great accomplishment."

In Monday's game, senior Steven Masini scored 29 points and went 16-for-16 from the free throw line as Dora (13-5) pulled away in the second extra session.

Junior Cole Kircher added 12 points and sophomore Roddy Neal 11 for the Coyotes, who finished the night 28-for-33 from the foul line while the Eagles were just 7-of-15.

Senior Jaden Martinez scored 24 points for CCS, while senior O.B. Blanco chipped in 14.

In other New Mexico area games on Monday:

Texico boys 61, Jal 50 – At Texico, the Wolverines (11-8) erased a one-point halftime deficit by outscoring the Panthers 39-27 in the final two stanzas.

Six players scored seven or more points for Texico, led by juniors Cade Figg with 16 and Daltyn Cain with 10. For Jal (12-8), senior Jacob Lujan tallied 15 points and senior Alexavier Carreon added 13.

Texico girls 59, Jal 30 – Senior Catelyn Breshears tallied in 24 points as the Lady Wolverines (7-12) opened an 18-7 advantage at the quarter and cruised.

Sophomore Julissa Hernandez led the Lady Panthers (9-11) with 11 points.

Farwell games postponed – Farwell's District 3-2A matchups scheduled for Tuesday night were postponed by Monday night's snow, and have been rescheduled for tonight at Farwell.

Meantime, other Texas area games originally slated for Tuesday night were moved up to Monday. In girls action:

Bovina 51, Amarillo Highland Park 41 – At Bovina, the Fillies (10-13, 2-4 District 3-2A) built an 18-point lead through three quarters and staved off the Lady Hornets (3-16, 0-6), who got 37 of their tallies from junior Cassie McClung.

Senior Alyssa Marquez paced Bovina's balanced attack with 12 points, while senior Aaliyah Lara and junior Aaliyah Garcia had nine apiece and junior Destiny Lara added eight.

At Lamesa, the Lady Mules (15-14, 6-3 District 3-3A) dropped a 64-53 decision to the host Lady Tornadoes (13-15, 4-4).

On the boys side:

Bovina 61, Highland Park 56 – Senior Ceasar Amaya drilled five 3-pointers and finished with 23 points as the Mustangs won a tight one from the Hornets.

Junior Miguez Lopez added 10 points for Bovina (14-10, 2-2), which got scoring from nine players. For the Hornets (11-13, 0-4), sophomore Elyes Torres netted 24 points, senior Cutter Kennedy 14 and sophomore Zack McClung 11.

At Lamesa, the Tornadoes (23-2, 6-1 District 3-3A) posted a 61-26 over Muleshoe (7-10, 2-5).
