Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
HOBBS – Clovis High's swim teams got pushed in their most recent outing.
Los Alamos captured both team titles in Saturday's Bob Reid Invite while the Wildcats and Lady Wildcats were second. The Hilltoppers finished with 605 points to 474 for the Wildcats on the boys side, while the Lady Hilltoppers posted 656 points to 532 for CHS in girls competition.
Los Alamos is the defending boys state champion.
"It was really good competition with Los Alamos," Clovis co-coach Vincent de Maio said. "Those guys were pushing us, no doubt about it."
It was the final meet for the Cats and Lady Cats until they return to Hobbs for district competition Feb. 3-4. The state swim meet is slated for Feb. 17-18 at Albuquerque Academy.
Both teams earned a ton of state qualifying marks, but the boys had five new ones – including two each for juniors Ricky Southern (100 freestyle, 200 freestyle) and Kriday Andiboina (100 freestyle, 100 breaststroke).
De Maio said the Cats and Lady Cats have qualified just about everybody they'd hoped to, so now they can just focus on stronger events.
"We got a lot of business taken care of, so now at district we can swim (events that) we want to and not worry about qual times," he said.
The girls placed in all 11 swimming events, while the boys scored in everything except the 50 freestyle.
The lone event winner for the Cats was junior Porter Kidd in the 500 freestyle (5 minutes, 1.96 seconds), but they were second in five others while the Lady Cats did post a win, but earned second place in four events. CHS placed two teams in each of the three relays on both sides.
