Lady Wolverines rally for 39-29 win

TEXICO – It's hard to imagine a 26-point swing in a game where neither team reaches 40.

It happened Thursday night, though, as Texico's girls opened District 6-2A with a 39-29 victory over Clayton.

The Lady Wolverines looked to be in deep trouble, trailing 21-11 midway through the second quarter, but they scored the final six points of the half and held the Lady Yellowjackets to just two free throws over a span of 18 minutes.

By the time Clayton (16-4 overall), ranked No. 3 in Class 2A by MaxPreps and the defending 2A state champions, scored from the field again with less than two minutes left, the Lady Wolverines (8-12) were commanding a 39-23 cushion.

Needless to say, it was a big win for Texico, which came in with a No. 15 ranking.

"I think our rebounding really helped us," senior guard Catelyn Breshears, who finished with a game-high 13 points. "We knew we had a chance, and we really stepped it up in the second half."

Junior Kaya New tied the game on a free throw with 3:18 left in the third quarter, then gave Texico its first lead since the opening stanza with a 3-pointer to make it 25-22. It was part of a 17-0 run which carried well into the final canto.

"Both teams kind of got in a little foul trouble," Lady Wolverines coach Jaylyn Cook said. "But when they had No. 13 (senior Morgan Crisp) and No. 30 (junior Emersen Beiland) go out, it gave our kids a little confidence."

Texico faces a tall order in a district where each of the other teams has won at least 12 games. The Lady Wolverines visited Santa Rosa (14-6, 0-1) on Saturday before hosting Pecos (12-7, 1-0) on Friday.

"We definitely came out and were ready to play," Breshears said. "We worked with each other and worked the ball as effectively as we could."

Sophomore Adalyn Autrey added nine points for Texico. Meantime, Beiland led Clayton with nine points and Crisp finished with eight.

While Cook said her team played well on the defensive end, she acknowledged that the Lady Yellowjackets had a bit of an off night.

"They're a great team," she said. "A lot of shots didn't fall for them tonight."

In other girls games on Thursday:

Dora 53, Gateway Christian 35 – At Roswell, the Lady Coyotes broke open a close District 4-1A game by outscoring Gateway 16-4 in the third stanza.

Junior Faith Jasso tallied 17 points for Dora (11-8, 1-0 district) while juniors Bre'ann Rodriguez and Jenna Ramirez added 10 and nine, respectively. High scorer for the Lady Warriors (3-9, 1-1) was sophomore Kimber Balok with 12 points.

In a Wednesday contest:

Panhandle 50, Farwell 42 – In the makeup of a Texas District 3-2A Tuesday postponement at Farwell, the Lady Panthers took a big step toward nailing down the district's regular-season crown, pulling away with a 13-7 scoring advantage in the final segment.

Sophomore Avery Cathey led Panhandle, ranked No. 5 in Texas Class 2A, with 17 points while senior Katelyn Haney added 13. For the Lady Blue (23-5, 4-2), who came in ranked ninth, sophomore Makylee Baldwin finished with 13 points.
