CHS wrestlers compete in Pojoaque tournament

POJOAQUE – Clovis High’s wrestlers had 11 place-finishers – 10 boys, 1 girl – in Saturday’s Pojoaque Valley Invitational tournament.

Los Lunas took the combined boys-girls team title with 99 points, well ahead of runnerup Moriarty with 63 ½. Clovis finished ninth in the 16-school field at 34, one point ahead of Santa Fe High and 2 ½ points behind Carlsbad.

The Wildcats did better at the upper weights, with senior Michael Tree placing fourth at 172 pounds and sophomore Angel Diaz at 189, senior Samaj Satchel at 215 and freshman Kaleb King at heavyweight all coming in fifth.

Trujillo lost by first-period pin to Los Lunas junior Jonathan Trujillo in the third-place match at 172, while Diaz pinned Los Lunas sophomore Rohan Sullivan in the first period, Satchel did the same to eighth-grader Manuel Jimenez of Santa Fe High and King scored a second-period fall against Tierra Encantada senior Isidro Contreras in final-round bouts.

Also for the Cats, senior Steve Edwards posted a 10-9 victory over sophomore Estaban Wright of Los Lunas for seventh place at 107, sophomore Kaell Berry was pinned in the second stanza by Moriarty eighth-grader Roldan Obniel at 127 pounds to finish eighth, sophomore Rhiley Williams claimed ninth place at 145 with a first-period pin of Tierra Encantada junior Kevin Marque and sophomore Noah Lyles lost in the 11th-place match by first-period pin to freshman Angel Ventura of Pecos. Meantime, junior Fidel Madrid was awarded 13th place at 139 pounds and freshman Nolan Rodriguez 15th place at 133.

The Lady Wildcats had three entries in the tournament, and the only one to place was freshman Zulehiny Mendoza, who was fourth after losing by second-period pin to Moriarty freshman Addison C De Baca at 107 pounds in match for third place.

The Cats and Lady Cats were slated to host Hobbs in District 4-5A duals on Tuesday night to wrap up the regular season. Girls regional competition is scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Albuquerque, while the boys regional is set for Feb. 10-11 at Las Cruces.
