All geared up for some competitive Sunday football

It’s Super Sunday and in answer to Bocephus’ question for years — yes, I am ready for some football.

I’m a bit of a throwback in that the most important thing about this year’s Super Bowl is that Tom Brady won’t be playing quarterback in it. No, actually that’s the second-most important thing. The most important thing is the game itself — football.

While I’m happy that Brady won’t be making an appearance, I’m sad that neither will my Denver Broncos. I’m also sad that it’s the last weekend of football until the fall.

If my Broncos can’t be on the field at the Super Bowl, my next greatest wish is that Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs make it there. He’ll be there despite injury and wearing the title of NFL Most Valuable Player once again.

Mahomes is perhaps the only player who could overshadow the phenomenal play of Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts. Sure, Hurts is a huge threat to run the ball, but so is Mahomes. Plus, with Mahomes he might complete a pass thrown behind his back or through his legs. He might even throw it lefty (off-hand). He’s also been known to catch a few passes.

I like a plate of Super Nachos as much as the next guy and don’t get me wrong, I’m going to eat something during the big game. But what I’ll mostly be consuming is the football. Lately, that hasn’t been disappointing.

Things have mostly been competitive and the level of play has been top notch.

We’ve had a few stinker Super Bowls and strangely enough, the last one was when Mahomes met Brady in Super Bowl LV in 2021. I wanted so bad for Brady to be humbled and with the score 31-9, it never got close to happening.

The only Super Bowl that hurt worse for me was when San Francisco ripped Denver apart 55-10 in 1990.

Watching Joe Montana and Jerry Rice do that to my team almost turned me off to Super Bowls completely.

Eventually I got that Super Bowl champion t-shirt, however.

I believe that the Eagles have held the edge with the odds-makers all week and rightly so. They are solid in all phases and consistent all year. If I was betting big money, I would have to fly with the Eagles. I don’t have big money, or even little money to bet, so I’m pulling for the Chiefs.

I know that goes against our brand new Broncos’ head coach Sean Payton’s proclamation earlier this week that he was pulling for the Eagles because we don’t want anyone else in our division to win. I like Payton’s attitude for his new job but I’m still entertained and inspired watching Mahomes in the Super Bowl.

Mahomes has played through two playoff games so far with a high ankle sprain and he’s gotten it done despite an injury that sidelines many for weeks. If he’s at least 57 percent on that ankle, I say he’ll be a winner in Super Bowl LVII.
