Hobbs' Mackey sets school mark with 51 points

HOBBS – Clovis High’s boys did a decent job on everyone from Hobbs on Friday night except for two guys – and one in particular.

Senior forward Michael Mackey scored a school-record 51 points and the Eagles posted an 88-68 District 4-5A victory over the Wildcats. The previous mark was 49 points by Larry Robinson in 1970 against Carlsbad.

Sophomore guard Abraham Pena added 19 points for the Eagles (13-11, 3-1 district). Other than that, no one had more than five points for Hobbs.

The 6-foot-2 Mackey, who had four 3-pointers and went 15-for-17 from the foul line, tallied double figures in each quarter – 15 points in the first, 11 in the second, 10 in the third and 15 in the fourth.

Hobbs led 22-14 at the quarter and gradually expanded the margin, finishing it off with 27 points in the final stanza.

For the Cats (10-13, 0-4), who saw their losing streak extended to five games, junior forward Champ Gooden scored 22 points, junior forward Marvin Cox added 16 and junior guard Keilyn Parker had 10.

The Cats wrap up the regular season this week with a home makeup game against Carlsbad on Monday and another tilt at The Rock on Friday against Roswell High.

Carlsbad 48, Clovis 40 (Tuesday) – The Cavemen pulled away during a 12-6 run in the final stanza.

Junior forward Samuel Gee nailed a 3-pointer at the end of a seesaw first half to give Carlsbad (17-7, 4-0), which won at Roswell High 46-43 on Friday, a 21-20 lead at the break. It stayed close through the third stanza, which ended with the Cavemen up 36-34.

Six-foot-5 senior guard Damian Perez scored 15 points for Carlsbad, while Gee followed with 10. Perez netted six points and senior guard Devin McWright added five in the final quarter for the Cavemen, who have won 17 of 20 since an 0-4 start that included a two-point loss in overtime and a pair of one-point setbacks.

Gooden was the only player in double figures for Clovis, finishing with a game-high 16 points.
