CLOVIS – Melrose pulled out to a 17-point halftime lead and the Buffaloes cruised to a 65-48 District 6-1A boys basketball victory over Clovis Christian on Tuesday night.
Sophomore Cy Draper led three players in double figures for the Buffs (16-4, 4-1 district) with 16 points, while freshman Jaxon Odom had 11 and sophomore Brayden Eldridge 10. Seniors Noah Gershon and Carter Teune accounted for all but four points for the Eagles (14-8, 2-4), each finishing with 22 points.
In other boys tilts on Tuesday:
Farwell 62, Vega 47 – The Steers maintained their one-game lead in District 3-2A, building a 20-point halftime cushion against the Longhorns at Vega.
Junior Corey Stancell led a balanced attack for Farwell (23-4, 8-0) with 15 points, senior Adrian Nunez chipped in 14 and sophomore Rylee McElroy had 13. For Vega (15-11, 4-4), junior Logan Mason led the way with 12 tallies.
Panhandle 56, Bovina 41 – At Panhandle, the Panthers (19-6, 7-1) kept pace in 3-2A, although they needed a 24-9 run in the third quarter to break open a one-point game.
Senior Landyn Hack put in 24 points for Panhandle, while top scorers for Bovina (14-14, 2-6) were seniors Darian DeLaRosa with 14 points and Ceasar Amaya with 10.
Brownfield 70, Muleshoe 54 – The host Cubs (13-13, 7-4 District 3-3A) pulled away from a tie game through three quarters, tallying 29 points in a final stanza that included four 3-pointers and 9-for-13 free throw shooting.
Junior Jojo Carrillo led three players in double figures for Brownfield with 26 points, including 19 in the second half. Freshman Pedro Rodriguez chipped in 14 points and senior Malik Mason 13 for the Cubs.
Junior Sebastian Kirven led the Mules (7-13, 2-8) with 18 points, while senior Irvin Torres had 12 and senior Davian McMullen added eight.
Gateway Christian 45, Floyd 43 – In District 4-1A at Floyd, senior Hayden Wigley scored 12 points and the visiting Warriors (3-13, 1-3) erased a four-point halftime deficit by outscoring the Broncos 13-6 in the third canto.
Senior Brayan Gallegos topped Floyd (5-13, 1-4) in scoring with 10 points.
In girls contests on Tuesday:
Farwell 81, Vega 30 – Eleven players scored for the Lady Blue at Vega, led by 19 and 18 points, respectively, from sophomores Makylee Baldwin and Bella Jaime. Farwell (27-5, 8-2) cruised into halftime with a 50-9 advantage.
Another sophomore, Landri Richey, also reached double digits with 13 points for the Lady Blue, who face Hale Center on Monday in a bi-district round playoff game at 6 p.m. (CST) in Levelland. High scorer for the Lady Longhorns (9-14, 6-4) was senior Cami Cox with nine.
In another District 3-2A regular-season finale, district champion Panhandle (18-1, 10-0) opened a 28-2 lead at the quarter and went on to beat Bovina 81-11. Junior Lesley Esparza accounted for six points for the Fillies (11-15, 3-7), who finished fourth in the district and have a 6 p.m. (CST)Monday date with Sudan in the bi-district round at Hereford.
Brownfield 45, Muleshoe 40 – At Brownfield, the Lady Cubs (14-17, 7-5 District 3-3A) pulled even with Muleshoe (16-15, 7-5) for second place in district standings, but the Lady Mules were awarded the No. 2 seed from the district in next week’s bi-district playoffs. Muleshoe has a first-round matchup on tap on Monday against Alpine at 5 p.m. (CST) in Denver City.
Brownfield erased an eight-point, first-quarter deficit by outscoring the Lady Mules 14-5 in the second segment. Sophomore K.K. Fininen tallied 16 points and senior Jaelyn Molina 12 for the Lady Cubs, while sophomore Megan Moran had 12 points and senior Aaliyah Sanchez 11 for Muleshoe.
Gateway Christian 38, Floyd 26 – In District 4-1A at Floyd, Gateway (5-10, 2-2) limited the Lady Broncos (2-14, 0-5) to 14 points through the first three stanzas. Junior Susie Perry tallied 15 points for the Lady Warriors while Floyd got 14 from sophomore Nevaeha Brown.
