Cats qualify four wrestlers for state meet

LAS CRUCES – Clovis High qualified four boys for state wrestling competition over the weekend in a regional meet hosted by Las Cruces High.

CHS will send five wrestlers, including freshman Sunnay Ward at 165 pounds for the girls, to this weekend’s state meet in Rio Rancho. Ward qualified the previous weekend in girls regionals at Del Norte H.S. in Albuquerque.

The top seven in each weight class advanced to state. For the Wildcats, senior Semaj Satchel posted the top finish, coming in sixth at 215 pounds after losing to senior Malik Felder of Albuquerque High by second-period pin in the fifth-place matchup.

Three Cats were seventh – sophomore Kaell Berry at 127, senior Michael Tree at 172 and freshman Kaleb King at heavyweight. All three won their final-round matchups – Berry by first-period pin over junior D’Andre Martin of Alamogordo, Tree by first-period fall against junior Julien Montano of Centennial and King by second-period pin against sophomore Javier Filero of Gadsden.

Another Clovis wrestler, sophomore Rhiley Williams at 145 pounds, lost in his seventh-place contest against junior Jeremiah Otero of Carlsbad by second-period pin.

The Cats had four others competing at regionals – senior Steven Edwards at 133 pounds, junior Fidel Madrid at 139 and sophomores Noah Lyles at 152 and Angel Diaz at 160.
